On Friday, June 11th, the first match in World Cup gambling occurs when host South Africa takes on Mexico in Johannesburg.

South Africa got a guaranteed entry into the World Cup because they're the host nation. Whether they can get past the group stage is questionable and the opener in World Cup odds against Mexico may answer that question.

Mexico is rated 17 in the FIFA World Rankings and has qualified for thirteen World Cups. On the other hand, they've never won the World Cup, with their best progression being to the Quarterfinals in 1970 and 1986. Both years, the World Cup was conducted on Mexican soil. They've had far more success in other competitions such as the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which they've won five times.

South Africa is not without a chance but World Cup gambling will favor Mexico in the beginning match. Group A has France as the favorite while second place is really up for grabs in the group between Mexico, Uruguay and South Africa. South Africa can be a factor in Group A if they can get a win or a draw in the first match. There really is no way to overstate how important this first match is to South Africa. The match opens up the World Cup and it may determine whether the team has any chance of advancing. If South Africa can get a result against Mexico they have a chance but it they lose they would be in trouble with matches remaining against France and Uruguay.

Also known as Bafana Bafana, South Africa's national football team was actually banned from FIFA until 1992. This year, they will be the first African nation to host the World Cup. They've made great strides since 1992. Though they've qualified for the World Cup twice, in 1998 and 2002, they've only progressed to Round 1.

Mexico is a small favorite in World Cup gambling in the beginning match and the total is low. It could be a very tight, low scoring match between two teams that are not likely to score a lot of goals. Overall, South Africa could possibly hold Mexico down, though Mexico has a couple of players who could score. Mexico will hope that Arsenal striker Carlos Vela or Manchester United's Javier Hernandez can achieve a goal.

France is the -135 favorite to win Group A with Mexico the second choice at 350. Uruguay is right there at 365 in World Cup odds and South Africa is not a huge longshot at 600. South Africa is actually given more of a chance to win this group than several other teams in other groups. Group A is not viewed as one of the more solid groups. France is viewed as a solid team but there are seven other teams in the World Cup who have lower odds to win it all. Mexico and Uruguay are not viewed as strong teams so South Africa does have a chance to make it from this group to the knockout round. All told, South Africa is a huge longshot to win the World Cup at 90-1.
