The surprise hit of the summer, flip-flops for men have really taken off in 2010. With a bigger range of flip-flops on the high street than ever before, you are guaranteed to find a pair to suit your summer look. An inexpensive way to let your feet breathe during the hottest time of the year, flip-flops are versatile, comfortable and look great too provided you follow a few basic rules.

Choosing flip-flops as your summer footwear means you need to pay some attention to your feet. Our feet are usually hidden away for most of the year and they need some extra attention to get them ready to bare. Keep your toenails short, buff away dead skin with a pumice stone, and moisturise to get your feet in shape.

When choosing flip-flops it is important to get the right fit. Flip-flops often come in ranges that cover half sizes, so finding a pair to fit is not as easy as you think. Too big and you will hear that embarrassing flip-flop sound, too small and your toes will curl over the front edge. Ideally you want to choose a pair closest to your trainer size so that they extend just past your heel.

One downside to flip-flops is that they tend to wear out quite quickly. This is not surprising as we really put them through their paces in summer, exposing them to the surf, gritty sand, the fading powers of the sun, not to mention our sweaty summer feet. Keep them fresh by buying a couple of new pairs every summer. Old pairs will not be comfortable, and they probably will not smell too good either.

Take care of your flip-flops and they will last you for longer. A simple wipe down with a damp cloth or sponge after each wear will keep them looking good. Foam varieties can bruise really easily, and one trick to help them replump and reshape is to steep them in a bath of hot soapy water, then let them dry naturally.

Try not to wear you flip-flops all the time in the summer. They are extremely flat and offer little cushioning for your feet, so excessive wear means that they will take their toll on your feet, ankles, knees and even your back.

While flip-flops are incredibly versatile, perfect for the garden, the beach, barbeques, strolling around on holiday and venturing out to the park, they are still not acceptable footwear everywhere. Some nightclubs might still refuse you entry, and your workplace, and workmates, may not be too pleased if you turn up for work with your sweaty feet on show.

When you wear any kind of footwear without socks, especially in the heat of the summer months, your feet are bound to sweat and you will experience more chafing as a result. If your feet start to hurt, take a break from the flip-flops and give your feet time to recover. Blister plasters are great for protecting blisters as they are made from a cushioning gel, so you might find these useful too.
