The Melbourne Cup was born following the quest of Victoria Turf Club to put on a good handicap which would rival its counterpart, the Victoria Jockey Club. While 1860s racing administrators were enthusiastic and visionary in many ways, not in their wildest dreams would they have thought the cup would become what we know it today. Melbourne cup carnival is celebrated every year on first Tuesday in the month of November.

This year (2009) it is going to be held on first Tuesday of November that is on 3rd of November, in Melbourne, Australia, the World’s most famous horse racing is held annually at Flemington racecourse by the Victoria Racing Club. Hundreds and Thousands of spectators gather at the track in excited anticipation of the finish. In 2008 the owner of the winning horse received AUD$5.5 MILLION.

It is a National icon embedded in Australia’s cultural fabric and strikes many emotions with all ages around the country. Not everyone comes for the racing; many people attend for the carnival atmosphere, which begins in the car park. Another highlight is the high fashion indeed, The Melbourne Cup is arguably, the most important went on the Australian fashions on the Field” was launched by Victoria Racing Club (VRC) in 1962 and has become the most popular outdoor fashion event in Australia. The purpose of the event is to attract a more women to the racing, in that it has been a raging success.

Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday for the Melbourne metropolitan area, and is Australia’s major horse racing event. Melbourne Cup Day is Australia’s most famous Tuesday. It’s a day when a nation stops whatever it’s doing to listen to the race call or watch the race on TV, and even those who don’t usually bet buy a ticket in a sweep. It is a peak of Spring Racing Carnival when champagne and canapés, huge hats, and race track fashions sometimes overshadow the business of the Day- horse racing. The race is run over 3200 meters and is a handicapped race. This means, that the better the horses, is the more weight it has to carry. This shows that the horse has to carry the weight of stones with it during the race.
