If you''re taking a holiday in the Mediterranean sun this summer, and you''ve already picked out your destination of choice, you''ll no doubt want to explore all that the region has to offer. Hiring a car is a great way to cheaply and easily make yourself mobile, and to go further and make the most out of your holiday.

In Spain''s big cities such as Barcelona there is of course plenty to see and do within walking distance of the kinds of places you''re likely to be staying. You can take a walk down the tree-lined pedestrianised walkway Las Ramblas to visit the shops and dine in the restaurants, or wander down the adjoining side streets for a more authentic local experience. The famous Gaudi buildings, and particularly the vast Sagrada Familia cathedral, are spectacular sights all close by.

However if you head further, you''ll be rewarded with even more. Travel easily between the Casa Batello and Casa Mila for more examples of Gaudi''s modernist style. There are over fifty museums in and around the city, enabling you to go and immerse yourself in modernist art and contemporary Catalan culture.

If however you are taking the kids and need to find something to keep them entertained, then amusement parks like the Tibidabo park or Port Aventura are just the ticket and only a short drive away. The Barcelona Aquarium meanwhile is sure to entertain, containing as it does more than 450 species of aquatic life.

Across the region you can go and visit picturesque beach towns such as Roses, Begur, Tarragona and Burriana, and go for a swim in the Balearic Sea, enjoying good food and the quaint Spanish atmosphere.

If you go for a drive up the Montserrat mountain you''ll be gifted with a wonderful view of the surrounding landscape. Many people go so far as to climb the twelve hundred metres to the Benedictine abbey at the peak in order to watch the vista as the sun rises.

If you happen to be in town when Barcelona''s world-famous football club has a home game, you could take a trip to see them in action at their 100,000-seater Camp Nou stadium. If you''re looking for sporting action, cultural excursions or simply a lot of fun, hiring a car to help you get around will enable you to make the most of your holiday.

Going for a walk around the town will only ever allow you to graze the surface. By hiring a vehicle and getting around you''ll be able to see and enjoy so much more on your vacation.
