Medical Alarm Systems Help Seniors Remain Independent

Seniors that live alone sometimes worry about what would happen if they have an accident at home and nobody is around to help. They're not the only ones ? they will often have relatives and other loved ones worrying about them as well. If you're a senior, what would happen if you fell and injured yourself and can't get to a phone?

Now you can protect yourself from that situation by subscribing to a medical alarm service. The service will work with the existing phone line in your home, but the service is better than just having another phone. The unit is more like an intercom system, featuring a big button for emergencies. These types of services also typically include a portable device that you can wear like a bracelet or necklace that also has an "emergency button." If something happens and you need help, all you need to do is press the button and the intercom unit will connect you with a professional from the service's monitoring center.

From there, you'll be in good hands. If you need immediate assistance, the monitoring agent will notify emergency medical services and tell them if you have any medical conditions that they need to be aware of.

All of this is preferable to simply dialing 911 for several reasons:

1. If you're hurt, you don?t want to fumble with a phone, you'll just want to push a button and talk to a professional service agent who can help.

2. Dialing 911 will usually have a wait time, during which you'll have to hold onto the phone and wait. Again, if you're seriously injured, it will be hard to wait patiently by the phone for someone on the other end to answer.

3. The service will have personal information such as your address and contact info on file, so they will be able to easily convey that information to local emergency services. If you have any pertinent medical conditions, you won't need to convey them to emergency services while you're injured and hurting ? the medical alarm service agent will do that for you.

4. If you accidentally press the button, it's not a big deal. The service agent will be connected, you can tell them it was a false alarm, and that's all. If you were to accidentally dial 911, they would seriously tell you to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Medical alarm services are worthwhile for seniors that live alone because they act as a specialized middleman between you and your local emergency service. Because of the devices they give you, they are easier to contact in the event of an accident.

If there is an accident, they will be able to coolly and evenly relay your information to the local emergency service ?

Something you may not be able to do given the circumstances. Best of all, having the service and the emergency device on your person most of the time gives you peace of mind knowing that help is immediately available if you need it.
