Mechanical engineers can be called "Machine engineers" as they design and develop and enhance anything that is a machine and are therefore found in all sectors mechanical engineers design components, parts of machinery, systems or processes used in the manufacturing process and tend to specialize in areas such as robotics and the automotive industry.

In the United States, the field of mechanical engineering currently employs over 226,000 individuals and has many prospects for new job creation in emerging fields such as biotechnology and nano-technology. The US Bureau of labour statistics estimates that over a further 10,000 jobs will be present for mechanical engineers by the year 2016.

Mechanical Engineers study:

Statics - the way forces are transmitted to and throughout a structures
Dynamics - the velocities, accelerations and resulting forces for any system in motion
Kinematics - how a mechanism behaves when t is in motion
Material Strength and Science
Thermodynamics - how energy gets converted into power
Fluid Mechanics
The selection of Manufacturing processes
Engineering Economics - the estimation of manufacturing costs

First degrees (Bachelor of Science) in Mechanical engineering will involve: composition and technical writing to improve communication skills. History and political science courses for a grasp of the humanities, marketing and accounting principles for all- round business knowledge and basic engineering and computer skills.

A first degree in Mechanical Engineering can lead to any of the following: Jobs in the general business and services industry, Graduate studies, Research laboratory technicians, Military personnel and Government officials as it prepares students for a range of job tasks. These include:

Conceptual and Developmental design.
Analysis and Research - Testing the functionality of equipment, components and systems to prevent equipment failures and recommending design modifications.
Presentations and report writing.
Project management - liaising engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, coordinate the maintenance and safety procedures, service schedule,
Data Interpretation - Reading and interpreting blueprint, technical drawings, schematics, and reports
Work with suppliers - to ensure a steady supply of materials required to maintain machines and equipment.
Sales - soliciting new business, making business proposals to interested clients
Consulting
Customer service

Attributes that allow Mechanical Engineers to be successful in their field include: strong problem solving skills and the ability to think outside the box, a strong sense of creativity, networking skills, ability to lead and manage conflicts as they arise on the job.

Entry level candidates can anticipate that the early years will entail the most technical work and skills knowledge. After acquiring experience, mechanical engineering positions will call for more project management and technical knowledge skills. Senior Mechanical engineers (those with ten or more years of experience in the field) can expect to be involved in corporate markets and need a strong grasp of mechanical engineering as it relates to the global economy and global markets.
