There are a variety of materials used in HVAC systems. Iron, steel, plastic, copper, and aluminum are the most common materials that you will run across in these types systems.

Most HVAC system piping is made of iron, or an iron derivative, such as cast iron or steel. These are the metals of choice for piping because they are generally very resistant to corrosion. They are most resistant to corrosion in the presence of water and glycols than many other materials. Stainless steel piping is often used then a government agency, such as the Food and Drug Administration or the United States Department of Agriculture, require extreme cleanliness. For this reason, many food plants have stainless steel piping in their air conditioning and ventilation systems. This is generally not a problem, though stainless steel does tend to suffer more stress corrosion cracking that is often caused by chloride ions in the water than other materials.

Plastic piping for air conditioning systems has been growing immensely in popularity over the last two decades. This is becoming such a trend because plastic piping is generally less expensive and more versatile than its metal counterparts. Additionally, plastic acts as an insulator, as opposed to a conductor like metal. This is especially beneficial for HVAC systems that are located in extremely hot or extremely cold environments.

Copper and aluminum are materials that are frequently used in such systems because they are excellent conductors of heat. However, they are not nearly as strong as steel. It is important to consider what the needs of the system are when considering what material to have your HVAC system manufactured out of.

Ensure that you look into a variety of different systems before choosing what material you are going to have your HVAC system manufactured from.
