For some, mastering the art of braaiing takes years to perfect as it is unfortunately not as easy as just slapping your meat on the braai and returning to the braai once the meat is done. There are many different aspects to ensuring that your braai goes well. If you know how to do it correctly, you will have the most enjoyable braaiing experience!

Firstly, you need to make sure you use the best quality meat you can find (and afford) and marinate it overnight for a tasty, juicy result. You can braai almost any kind of meat on the braai, but the most popular choices are steaks, sausages, chops and pork rashers. You can even braai a garlic roll wrapped up in foil on your braai, and other buns hiding garlic and butter inside. Corn on the cob is excellent on the braai, if you throw some butter on it whilst it is still hot! Braaiing the meat is really easy, as it helps lower the kitchen work for the other complements. Potato salads, bean salads and soft, fresh rolls go well with braai meat, and are usually very easy to throw together! This is part of the reason why it is so simple and hassle free to decide to have a braai.

In order to braai you need to create warmth. Creating the correct temperature for the coals is important. If you’re not sure if your coals are the perfect heat, do the following test: Keep your hand above the braai and count to 10. If you have to pull your hand before you reach 10, the coals are too hot. If you can keep your hands there for much longer than 10 seconds, then your coals are already too cold! You can use fire starters to get your fire going, and then wait until the right time to throw your meat on the braai. It is important that you keep the fire going, and burning at the right temperature. Some people use billows to blow the fire and keep it warm and the coals burning.

National Braai day is a yearly celebration by all South Africans. This day takes place on the 24th of September (National Heritage Day) and the aim of the day is to unite all South Africans by encouraging them to partake in this fun activity. This is a day that demographic groups, religious views and any other barrier do not exist. It does not matter what type of South African you are, if you live in this country, you braai!

After the braai, everyone does not just pack and up and go home. Many hours are spent sitting around the fire with drinks in hand. Good meat… Good friends… Great times! There is something communal and fantastic about braaiing, and it is also much more convenient and fun to cook your meat on a braai rather than in the oven! All you need is a small space to braai with proper air flow, some chairs, a table and all the food and drink you could possibly need!
