A critical component of any successful online or conventional business is a good marketing plan. A marketing strategy tailored to meet the unique needs of any particular business must be carefully designed. Significant thought and effort are required in the formulation of a good plan for either a product or a service.

The required components of a marketing plan include the concept to be marketed, the target audience, goals for specific time frames, and actions being contemplated to help the company reach those goals. A good plan should also allow for interim measures of progress to determine if the goals are being met or if the plan requires some adjustment. A marketing plan can cover as long as ten years, or less than one year for a special marketing campaign.

One of the initial steps is creating a mission statement. This statement reports on who and what you are as a business and also what you can provide. Specific and concise mission statement centers also on a phrase that identifies you significantly to your potential customers, not only on your marketing strategy.

Then look at what people out there could become your customers in the future. Also define who your existing clients are, and develop a method for maintaining that client base and expanding it. Advertising campaigns geared toward a target audience, methods of increasing web traffic, or utilizing articles and promotions are all ways you could do that. Consider collaborating with other businesses to set up links to each other.

You should then set concrete goals for the time frame that you have chosen. A marketing plan that vaguely forecasts an increase in sales will be less effective than a plan that sets a goal of a 20% increase in sales within one year. It is much easier to evaluate your company's progress when it is being compared to a specific goal, allowing you to compare where you are now to where you want to be.

The final step is developing the actual techniques to reach your goals. This can include training sales personnel, taking courses yourself or sending key staff to learn more effective sales methods and management techniques, developing in house training, and offering incentives to employees and loyal customers. Promotions might offer special gifts and discounts to attract new customers as well.

Any company needs to ensure that its goals are being met and to adapt when its original plans don't work. Also, a company requires the flexibility to adopt strategies that have been successful. This may require a company to purchase software to evaluate its performance, or hire outside evaluators. For a company, planning and execution are the difference between profitability and bankruptcy. Thus, a marketing plan is an absolute necessity if a business is to survive.
