Many visitors choose villas in Mallorca as a stylish and luxurious base with the freedom of self-catering going well with the laid back spirit of the island. There is so much to do here that you can usually turn up and take your pick rather than having to book ahead. Sailing and water sports can be found on most beaches, with a range of schools and tuition available for novices. Land based activities such as walking and horse trekking are well catered for.

Mallorca's diverse scenery includes some stunning mountain ranges and canyons, ideal for walkers and offering enough challenges for serious climbers too. Mallorca is one of the most appealing destinations in Europe for rock climbing, with plenty of limestone rock that provides a range of routes to test all abilities. With sheer slab walls, overhangs, and big wall routes available, you are never more than 15 minutes drive from a great climb. Tuition and organised climbs are also available.

Canyoning is a new sport that seems ideally suited to Mallorca. The aim is quite simple, to follow the canyon or stream downwards, yet the method can be challenging! Waterfalls, rock chutes and deep water gullies all need to be traversed, jumped off, and abseiled down. With vertical walls over 200 metres high and waterfalls up to 40 metres, canyoning on Mallorca can provide al the thrills and spills the most committed adverturer demands. In between the more thrilling episodes of canyoning, visitors are also treated to some amazing views. The geology and geography of the Mallorcan canyons is breathtaking, with natural environments to rival anywhere in Europe.

From gentle meadows to dramatic mountain paths, walking in Mallorca can be as easy or extreme as you choose. There are some truly amazing areas in the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range with summits over 1000 metres for the more adventurous walker. Across Mallorca, hill walking and scrambles – walks that involve a bit of climbing – are a fantastic way to spend a day outdoors in Mallorca.

The sea is a huge part of Mallorcan life, from its history when foreign invaders arrived by boat to try and take over the island to the present day fishing fleet harvesting the local waters for seafood that is served in local restaurants on the island. Both coastal and deep-water fishing are well catered for around the island, with some great spots to choose from along the coastline and plenty of excursions by boat.

The perfect holiday recipe should include sun, sea and sand. There is a fantastic range of beaches in Mallorca, with windsurfing, jet skiing, and swimming, diving and snorkelling well catered for. Beaches are often unspoilt and undeveloped, with equipment for a variety of water sports available to hire and lessons for beginners. There are ideal year round wind conditions for windsurfing, and kite surfing is popular especially in the north on the beaches close to Alcudia. Kayaking can be great day out, with a wonderfully rugged coastline and hidden turquoise water coves to explore. Sailing is also a popular sport here, with competitions, beginner's courses and boats for hire in many locations.

Anyone looking for a holiday deatination that provides a great choice of activity options would do well to consider Mallorca. Taking it easy at the end of a day of activities on land or on sea can be equally as pleasant, with some idyllic rural villages offering some charming restaurants with flavoursome local dishes. Combine all this with a stay in one of the many luxury Mallorca villas and you have the perfect recipe for a great adventure holiday.
