If you are going to become an affiliate marketer lets start at the beginning and see how it all works.

The first thing you need will be a product to sell and advertise that will convert to sales. But don’t let this easy sounding procedure fool you, it will take time and effort.

Finding a product to sell is the easy part, just go to Click Bank, Commission Junction, Amazon, eBay and many others. There is no shortage of companies that have an affiliate program.

The hard part is the marketing of the product, because if you can not get people to look at your product you will not make any sales.

Driving traffic to your website or blog will be the hardest part of the affiliate business. Internet marketing is such a huge area of expertise that many guru’s have become millionaire’s promoting their traffic generation methods.

There is list building, the favorite of many people, where you entice people to come to your website and by offering some freebie of perceived value your visitors will give you their email address. Once you have their emails you market your products to them on an ongoing basis. A captive audience is a sure way to establish a very prosperous future.

Another method of traffic generation is through article writing. You write an article and submit them to the various article directories and when people read your articles they may use them as content for their websites or simple click on your resource link and this is an easy way of getting back links to your site. The more links you have to your site the prettier your website looks to Google when they index your website and the more visitors who see your product.

Then there’s pay per click (PPC), although this is not a method recommended for new or beginner affiliates, when done right it has the advantage of tremendous results. This should be done only after you have gained some experience in affiliate marketing and having undergone the trial and error period that usually makes up the learning curve.

Although PPC does have the advantage of almost instant results, it can be costly if you are not familiar with keyword selection, SEO and a whole lot of other factors that play into having a good PPC campaign.

Lately, many beginner affiliates have chosen to start with blogs, Squidoo, Tweeter, Blogger and many other sites will allow the beginner to take the plunge into affiliate marketing without having to spend much or any money at all.

Blogs are pretty easy to setup since there is lots of help and free information within those sites to help you set up the blog. You will have to learn about social bookmarking, and how to leverage free traffic to your blog.

Traffic is the key to successful affiliate sales, without it your business will quickly die out and you will wind up frustrated like many others who tried and failed. Your success is predicated on learning all that you need to know to make your first sale. You will be amazed at the feeling you get once that happens.

There is a lot of good and free information and tools available. Check out Allan Gardyne’s AssociatePrograms.com. He usually has a lot of very good information. You can also go to JingerJarrett.com and download her free 23 page report, “Internet marketing tips” and these are only two of the sites that you can give you a better idea of how to either start or proceed.

Many people, new to affiliate marketing, will buy those $1,000 programs and try to make heads or tails of them. But they soon realize that many of these programs deal with advanced methods of marketing that are simply beyond the understanding of the buyer. This is where many people simply give up out of frustration.

There is no such thing as a shortcut to success. Every business takes time and effort to succeed, affiliate marketing is no different. The main reason many people give up is because they bought into the hype of quick money promises touted by many programs out there.

If you can remember that affiliate marketing is a business, like any other which requires serious consideration, you will eventually make the income you are looking for.
