Bat detectors are used to detect the presence of bats. Some bat-calls are unique and easy to recognise; for example, the Horseshoe bats. While bat-calls can vary as they fly and actively hunt, the ear can be trained to recognise species according to the frequency ranges and repetition rates of the echolocation calls. Bats also emit social calls, (which are otherwise known as non-echolocation calls) at ultrasound frequencies. In general, there are three types of bat detectors: Heterodyne bat detectors, Frequency division bat detectors, and Time expansion bat detectors.

Heterodyne bat detectors converts the noise made by bats into sound that we can hear. They can be tuned into a number of different frequencies which allow one to listen to varieties of bats.

Frequency division bat detectors record one pulse out of every 8 to 10 incoming pulses thus reducing a 56 kHz call to a 7 or 5.6 kHz call which is audible to humans. This type of bat detectors is popular among researchers as it may not be useful for commoners and bat enthusiasts. It is so, because without computer software, it is really very difficult to recognise where the bat really exists.
Time expansion bat detectors are the most expensive among other varieties of bat detectors and work in much the same way a high-speed tape-recorder does. Such bat detectors record the bat-call sound and then play it back at 10, 32 or 64 times slower so that the sound can be audible to humans.
