Luxury apartments cry out for trendy furniture and decoreThe days, people have too much choice, almost.A single purchase can take weeks, pouring over sofa styles and fabric samples, paint colors and lighting options. Sometimes you need something a little different. Often a Saarinen table or an Eames chair is the perfect touch. Sometimes a home needs something unique or funky like a George Nelson marshmallow sofa.
Antique shopping, for furniture, in New York is a daunting and tempting task. Some of the most unique shops follow down the river along Kent street, Williamsburg New York, overlooking the Hudson River.
If you aren't inclined towards the iconic, most of which is available as an original or reproductions, then explore and see if vintage is the niche for you. Vintage furniture shops abound in New York full of the odd, the kitsch, a few pieces that make you ask, "what in the world is that?"
Vintage in Williamsburg, NY, seems to encompass everything from pre-war Bauhaus to Danish modern, and the Japanese influence of Noguchi to the factory production of Herman Miller. Some 1930s pieces fit the brief, while production of Mid Century Modern continued right up until the 70's and 80's. Today we see a wave of modern pieces which mix and match very well with the furniture from the past. Fundamentally, Vintage is whatever label a designer wants to attach.
Designers are eclectic. I have a new sofa in a modern Italian style, for comfort. It is wise to be prudent when shopping. Many mid-century modern sofas are to be too spare. They lack comfort. There is not enough or padding for lounging, tv watching, and afternoon naps.
The problem is solved by combining the new and old. Match a comfortable sofa of a newer design, with a sculptural Danish Modern 1950's chairs and an Eames side table. Leave room for that Marshmallow sofa near the door.
Antique Shopping in Williamsburg, NY
Shopping for antiques and vintage furniture is half the fun. Let your friends know that you are searching. They may have a piece they'd be willing to add to your collection. I had one friend with a good coffee stashed away, and an aunt with a wonderful set of dining chairs in her basement in the suburbs.
Troll the shops. Don't be afraid to search through the lower end used furniture shops and flea markets. No one will be trying to sell a hidden gem like they might have 15 years ago, but there are pieces that the antique stores over looked because it wasn't common or marketable enough.
New York Antique dealers vs Ebay
Search the vintage shops, and check with antique dealers. Often, they come across good pieces in their travels. A professional shopper may can often offer a few choice pieces, or introduce you to an unusual collection.
Although many recommend ebay.com, I have found that most online sellers know what they have, and want top dollar (or more). Ebay forces shoppers to buy from a picture
New York Antique Dealers
In New York, start with the small shopws up and down the Hudson River. But, before buying, visit the larger dealers, R 20th Century, Saarine, 82 Franklin Street. Eames. Noguchi remains in production at Herman Miller, their New York showroom is on the 17th floor, 1177 Avenue of the Americas. M/n Modern Living Supplies at 142 Henny Street has both a retail showroom and auctions. They also handle restorations and create new pieces.
Never be in a hurry when shopping in New York, Willisamsburg Apartments can come to life with a single, perfect, piece of Vintage furniture.
