An allergy occurs, when a person is sensitized to a particular substance, that starts an allergic reaction. If an allergy prone person experiences allergens, for the first time, the allergic reactions do not occur, but the immune system is sensitized. Think of it, as being ready to fight allergens, that it wrongly considers to be invaders, intent on doing harm to you.

After becoming hypersensitive to a specific substance, when the immune system encounters the same type of allergen; it automatically over-produces antibodies to cope with the perceived threat. The antibodies bind with the allergens, and as they circulate around the body, they interact with other cells. Substances, including histamine, create inflammation, which is a frequent allergy condition. Allergies differ from person to person, and the symptoms go from something as mild as a drippy nose, to anaphylactic shock, which can be fatal.

When it is appropriate, skin testing is preferred to blood testing, because it is more specific, simpler to perform, and more economic. Nevertheless, your physician will know what is best suited to your personal circumstances.

If immunotherapy is considered an appropriate treatment, it could either reduce the severity of an allergy or cure it completely. It involves injecting progressively increased doses, of the allergen, known to be causing the symptoms. There have been encouraging results in dealing with various afflictions, including rhinitis.

Various drugs are used to counter the symptoms of allergy including, antihistamines and cortisone. Some preparations are obtainable over the counter, but it is best to find out from your physician, what is suitable for your own condition.

Nobody knows exactly the reason why some people suffer from allergies, when others do not. It may be that there could be a hereditary factor with some allergy sufferers. It seems a fact that the frequency of allergies is growing, and that it may be related to modern living.
