Less Multi-Tasking, Improved Productivity and More Love for Work At Home Mums.

Women have the reputation of being great multi-taskers. Work at home mums are irrefutably one amongst the communities of women who need this talent the most. To this point I've written a number of posts with elements regarding schedules and separating 'work time' and 'mum time'. However, it's sometimes impossible to separate those roles, and while I multi-task every day, I've realised recently that I scarcely give myself fully to one task at any particular time. While my body, actions and thoughts are engaged doing one thing, my mind is usually thinking about some other things at the same time. With this realisation, I have reached the conclusion that the solution revolves around one simple conscious effort I could make to exercise a better focus and productivity to any task at hand: Awareness.

As full-time mum working from home, my most important task is looking after my kids. But, with a developing home business requiring more thinking and planning, I found that I'd often be dividing my focus between my kids and my work, at the same time. Therefore I began this simple exercise when beginning to do an activity with my children. I said to myself: 'I will dedicate my undivided self to this activity with my kids'. I would not allow for business-related thoughts, checking emails, or even carrying out some housework. From the very first time I tried this easy commitment statement, I noticed that i became much more attentive and satisfied I felt while spending quality time with my children. It meant I absolutely absorbed the moment, noticed the little things that make a mother's heart fill with happiness and pride, gave more love and positive interaction to my children, and fully indulged in the first motivation why, like many work at home mums, I have a home business - looking after my children. It also meant that I got more conscious of all the mental distractions coming through, so that I'd purposefully turn them off and regain focus.

After applying this rule to my role as a mother, I did it for my home business. Of course, for work at home mums, it is not possible to commit 'I will devote my whole self to this current work task' when your little ones are running around and under your care. It is indeed a lot easier to shut down your work for your children than shut down your children for your business! Therefore don't absolutely commit to a work task unless you are assured that your kids won't need you; this will only cause frustration if you are interrupted. I specified my commitment declaration for work even further, in committing to one task at any given time (e.g. 'I will apply my entire self to calling customers'). This simple commitment increases my attention and thus my efficiency, and provides me the head space I need for solving problems and being creative!

Adding a straightforward commitment statement before starting an activity with my children or for my work at home business has definitely made a significant difference in my productivity and focus. For work at home mums, it's about focusing your awareness to the specific activity you have committed to. Less multi-tasking, physically and intellectually. Better productivity for my business and home duties? Yes. More love and inspiration for my children and from them as well? Positively! More rewards as a mum and business owner? Absolutely!
