Basically the skill of accepting can be divided into 3-4 subskills. Can you change yourself and your life if you see a reason to do so? Do you accept who you are regardless of what other people might think of you? Can you accept people for who they are without having the need to change them? Do you feel comfortable when some big change in your life happens?

If you answered yes to even one of those questions, your life is already easier than the life of most people. Because this is what accepting is all about. Nothing more, nothing less. Now it's up to you to learn how to accept. Actually, you need to unlearn how to resist. Because accepting is a natural process, resisting is a learned skill.

When you accept your life situation, you become better at managing your life. The only way to change something is to accept it as it is. Otherwise you wouldn't know how to act on it, would you? Yes, sometimes it is not that pleasant to look yourself in the mirror with brutal honesty. But it pays off big time. The only way to become truly awesome is to face every fear and every weakness you have.

And you know what? As soon as you accept yourself for who you are, these flaws of yours will start to diminish. Because you are not resisting to them anymore. You are not paying attention to what can bring you only bad emotions. You don't need those anyway. What you need is the drive, the impulse to change, and the direction to do it.

The main reason why most people fail to be themselves is simple - they aren't certain of what others will think of them. Once you've become close friends with certain people, you'll find it hard to change. Because you will fear they will not accept the new you. Well, life's too short to be someone you're not. Keep that in mind. All the time.

What you dream of may sound foolish, naive and plain stupid to others. Do you have to care about that? And will that even matter after you succeed? It never matters. Accept the fact that not everyone will like you. Give up the need to get approval from everyone you meet. You can't accept yourself and be free if you care about what others think of you. You are who you are!

As you become better at being yourself, you will start feeling the need for improvement. You will begin working on yourself, because you will see your flaws clearly instead of just ignoring them. This will make you both a better friend... actually it will make you better at everything. So do yourself a favor, and accept yourself as who you are. Nobody is perfect, but through acceptance, you can get pretty close.
