Team-building is a hot topic. Organizations invest a heap of resources in team-building, whether the money goes for workshops, consultants or coaches. What I don't often hear regarding is leadership team-building; i.e., building a solid team at the leadership level. This is often an often-overlooked area for building a business or improving the effectiveness or productivity of an organization. While not the key leaders of a corporation working well together, the chances of the organization's being wildly successful diminish substantially.

You can have individual departments (groups) performing well and people team members operating well along, but if the leaders of the organization aren't aligned, do not play well together or, worse yet, have continual infighting, the groups under every of these leaders are not likely to figure well together.
Simply suppose how much easier everything would be if your company's leadership team functioned well together. Suppose about the last few meetings you have had along with your leadership team. Did they include arguing, finger-pointing, lack of accountability, individuals interrupting every alternative and no definable actions created? Or was it simple, fun, targeted, respectful and at the top there have been clear steps and actions outlined and commitment from the individuals in the area? I'm betting closer to the previous than the latter. Think about if you directed resources toward leadership team-building...building a team of executives, managers, leaders of your organization whose primary goal was oriented toward what was best for the organization, not simply them or their teams. What may you be able to realize as a company?

I recently conducted a workshop on communication for a company with the president and her six key executives. This was honestly one in every of the most dysfunctional teams I had ever worked with. They interrupted every different, accused each different, centered on what was wrong, not operating or not nevertheless complete. They did not apprehend how to communicate thus that their views might be heard and understood. Their conferences consisted of a lot of talk and rhetoric, discussions but limited choices, and few if any action steps, agreements or goals defined. Nonetheless they were financially successful, customers were knocking at their door and that they had terribly low turnover rate at any position inside the company. Surprising? Not really. This can be a fairly common phenomenon. Corporations will be successful virtually despite themselves.

My purpose is that this: If you've got a corporation that is successful by your standards, how much additional successful could or not it's if the leaders were a team instead of a group of individual contributors? Can you build a thriving company with a group of individual high-notch players? Yes, and several corporations do. But I'm here to counsel that your upside potential will be restricted and you as the owner, president or CEO of this company will pay an inordinate quantity of time managing these relationships. Next time you have dollars to spend, assume regarding using them for leadership team-building activities. It may be the best decision you make this week.
