You know how costly it is to get high quality sprinklers, especially if you have installed an automatic sprinkler system on your garden. Do not just let your dollars be wasted. It is necessary to perform routine maintenance on your existing sprinklers for them to last longer. Lawn sprinkler maintenance also ensures that your lawn receives better and more accurate watering.

The first thing that you should check out during your lawn sprinkler maintenance is pressure. It is a common problem with sprinkler systems. Water that comes out on your sprinklers depends heavily on pressure; without the correct pressure, your sprinklers will not be able to perform its designated task. How would you know that your water pressure is functioning? Check out your lawn. If you have noticed large brown areas, it means that the sprinkler is not able to reach those areas of the lawn. Perhaps, your pressure is too high that the nozzles and heads of the sprinkler are damaged. If you found out that there is a problem with your pressure, you may need a sprinkler professional or a landscape specialist to check the pressure of the sprinkler heads. The expert will evaluate whether your sprinkler system needs pressure-reducing valves and heads or whether they can add new nozzles to your existing heads instead of replacing them.

As a general rule, you also have to regularly ensure that your sprinkler heads are always clean that is, free from dirt and glass clippings. Filth on the heads may affect the sprinkler head and its movement. Cleaning out dirt requires that you remove the head and flush the dirt out with water. After this, test your sprinklers to determine any additional problems. Do this at least twice a year.

For sprinkler systems equipped with a timer, make sure that it is in its best condition. If it is not working, check if it is plugged properly. If it still does not work, there might be an internal electrical issue involved. You have to call your manufacturer if this is the case.

Test the water coverage of your sprinkler system two to three times annually. Do this by placing five straight-shaped containers around the lawn, where water can reach them. Turn on the sprinklers at the same time. After a while, turn off the sprinkler and measure the amount of water in each container. If the amount of water in each container is not equal, then you will need to re-calibrate your sprinkler or adjust the heads.

If you have hired a professional sprinkler contractor to check and maintain your system, you can forego the above suggestions. Lawn sprinkler maintenance is oftentimes complicated since the system involves a network of pipes, valves, timers, and more. If you are not the do-it-yourself type of homeowner, it is best to leave the plumbing, electrical work, and general maintenance to the professionals.

If you want your lawn sprinkler system to last a lifetime, the key is maintenance.
