By the sixteenth century, they were created with hand cranks to power them or some were water-powered. In the seventeenth century, they became more advanced as they were now able to shape metals. In the eighteenth century, lathe became more advanced permiting the use of attachments and made it likely to produce more work more faster. Lathes have undergone many developments and are now fully advanced so that they may be mechanically programmed and regulated.
Woodworking lathes are the first types and all other versions are derived from the woodworking lathe. The smallest lathes are so small that they can be held in one hand. These types are mostly used by jewelers and watchmakers. Then there are metal working lathes which are used to mold metals similar to wood shaping. There are also cue lathes and glass working lathes.
