History

Shaws of Darwen have been manufacturing fireclay sinks in Lancashire, England for over 112 years using time honoured traditional methods and materials. Each sink crafted today is an individual product, bearing testament to the craftsmen who produce them.

Having refined fireclay production over the years to an ‘art form’, each Shaws sink is individually hand-made, making them ‘simply the best in the world’. A true test of quality is to examine the finished product, admire the finish and feel the weight – no lightweight imitations from Shaws – just traditional quality built to world-class manufacturing standards.

A choice of sink for everyone

From our Original, Classic, Inset and Undermount Collections there is a sink for everyone. Each kitchen sink is individually styled and handcrafted in fireclay ceramic which is cool and silky to touch, but with a robust, non-porous glaze.

In a traditional style kitchen most people will opt for a Butler or Belfast kitchen sink or one of a similar style of heavyweight ceramic sink to co-ordinate with their style of kitchen furniture and fittings.

If it is a cottage style kitchen with pine cabinets, then cream colour appliances blend in more appropriately than stark white. It was with this in mind that Shaws decided to continue to manufacture their world famous ceramic sinks in a Permagon (biscuit colour) finish to complement other appliances.

City chic apartments with smaller kitchens lend themselves perfectly to an inset or undermount square or circular bowl, especially when used within a granite work-surface.

As all of our sinks are very heavy, it must be remembered that bespoke cabinetry is required allowing the kitchen sink to be supported.

Care and maintenance

While no ceramic sink is impervious to damage, fireclay resists chips, scratches and stains better than any other sink material. In the rare instance of a chip, colour match repair kits are available, direct from Shaws of Darwen.

We also recommend that our ceramic sinks be cleaned purely with soap and warm water or for stained areas use a soft sponge or cloth with a non-abrasive cleaning product. Our hand-crafted sinks are manufactured with a durable glaze for years of hard wear but if an occasion arose that a metal pan or a cutlery item marks the surface we recommend ‘Astonish’ cleaner be used to remove the mark. Undiluted chemicals such as bleach should not be used.

Website
The site brings to the browser all the information required to make a choice of stylish sink, basket strainer waste with ceramic indices plus a range of complementary style taps – a full one-stop shop.

Combined within the site is a plethora of information outlining the manufacturing processes and details of product warranties as well as an on-line purchasing service which allows consumers immediate access to the entire product range from their desk top.

Using the Shaws website in no way detracts from the traditional routes to market, rather the service enhances that offering as many customers, existing and new, still prefer to touch and examine product before purchase.
