Generally, the first most common technique used to clean carpets is a daily or sometimes weekly vacuuming. In most cases when simple vacuuming is done, the loose particles such as dirt, dust, and loose hair are pulled from the carpets. Although the carpet may appear clean, there are some debris that escape the suction of the vacuum and lie deeper in the carpets.

The types of carpets laid in the home will decide the amount of dirt that can be trapped deeper in the carpets. Shag carpet for example is one of the worst kinds of carpet to put in a home that has a lot of heavy traffic. Heavy traffic pertains to a lot of people walking on the carpet. Anytime there are high amounts of traffic on carpet, more dirt is accumulated.

When vacuuming is done periodically throughout a year, usually once per year around spring cleaning time, carpets require a deeper cleaning procedure. When pets are included in the home such as cats or dogs, they leave and odor no matter how well cleaned a home is. Pets have accidents and in most cases shed hair in turn leaves the pet odor. Shampooing the carpets is a dire necessity to keep pet odors and stains on the carpets to a minimum.

Shampooers can be rented or purchased depending on the person's budget. Then there are soaps and detergents added to the shampooer to increase the effectiveness of the cleaning. Good shampooers will clean any type of carpet very well, lifting all debris that are caught in the knits of the carpets.

One of the most difficult things to remove from carpets is when candle wax finds it way into the carpets. Some use ice to remove candle wax from the carpets. This method has been proven successful, but only if the ice is applied immediately to the carpets where the candle wax has ended up. Other methods are used by applying scalding water, while using a wet dry vacuum immediately after using the water.

After deep cleaning carpets, and removing all stains and ground in dirt from the floor surface. It is always a wise decision to spray some sort of carpet protection onto the clean surface immediately after drying. These protections form a type of shield that allows spills of liquid to lay on top of the carpets and not soak in immediately leaving evidence of a stain. Once a stain is set into carpets, removing them can require an extreme amount of elbow grease, and in most cases is completely unsuccessful.

Finally, carpets if maintained properly using these cleaning techniques can last a great deal longer than those carpets that are not taken care of. This can save an extreme amount of money within the household, which can be spent on something else that is needed more by the entire family.
