Niche marketing involves targeting segments of the population who are not adequately served by existing sources.

You probably know that a popular subject on the Web like "dog training" is a highly competitive market. This means that many people search the Internet for the expression "dog training" and there are plenty of Internet marketers with websites trying to grab hold of a portion of that market. That is a highly competitive market.

In extremely competitive markets you will find it to be quite challenging to reach the first page of Google for a term like "dog training," You could, in fact, spend a lot of time and energy optimizing your site, obtaining links to your web site, and doing all the other tasks to help improve your search engine placement.

But, for what result?

Because such keyword phrases used in searches are so competitive, those who currently rank close to the top are constantly working to optimize their site and continue to build ever more backlinks to their website. It's a never ending struggle to stay on top.

So, unless you are the super guru of optimization you probably have only a small chance of displacing top sites in such a competitive market.

So, what's the answer for an individual just trying to break in to Internet marketing?

The solution is easy. Steer clear of the very competitive keyword phrases and locate phrases that receive a moderate amount of searches but have minor or no competition for the first page search results in Google and other search engines. There are tons of keyword phrases that meet the requirements for almost every major subject you can think of.

This is essentially what niche marketing is all about. Now, let's examine the steps you'll need to undertake to be successful.

First you must discover keyword phrases with a modest level of searching. You can imagine this as phrases that experience around 100 to 3000 or so searches a month. There will be a number of such phrases associated with any important subject.

Then you have to evaluate the competition on Google for those keyword phrases. Find out how demanding it will be to displace several of the sites already on Google's first page. Determine the level of optimization for those phrases and how many backlinks these websites have. This lets you know how much effort the webmasters of those sites have put into ranking for these keyword phrases. Not only that, but, it tells you how much effort you'll have to use to dislodge them from their top positions.

Once you've found favorable target phrases with insignificant competition, you'll have to build a website with pages that are optimized those keyword phrases. There are various tools you can use to build websites.

Finally, you've got to develop links from other websites to your site and to the pages on your web site so your site will rank well in the search engines and take over that market for those keyword phrases.

So, now you know what niche marketing is all about.
