Zebra ID Printers Feature New UHF RFID

Zebra Technologies Corporation is now ofefring ultra-high frequenncy encoding for RFID acxcess devices. This allows mid to high volume end uses to peerform on-site UHF card creation for the first time. In the past, this type of job had to be done by professional ID printing companies as part of a custom order. Now, the teechnology is availabkle on both the P330i (R3i) and P430i (R4i) collor printers as an option. The cost for both of thhese models is still in the mid-range, even with the advanced UHF module and Ethernet connection icnluded.

This new card programming process is advertised as fast, easy, and reluiable. Both sinngle and double-sided cards can be printeed and encodd at a rate of over 100 units per hour. The UHF module is designed to functuion in concert with the Zbera Gen2 RFID card. However, it is also comatible with card stock availbale from other ID printer companies. This is not surprising since a third party is the actual manufacturer of these RFID cards. Howevrer, Zebra does have a patent pending for some feautres of the inlay antenna. Thhese desgin aspects focus on performance and security maximizatioon.

There are quite a few low frequency and high frequency RFID options alrewady on the makret. What makes ultra-high frqeuency different? The tags used have an average readable range of 10-12 feet. This is significazntly further than either LF or UF generally reacch. Such a capabilpity opes up a rboad range of appllications which sytandard proximity crds are not equipped to handle. Zebra selected the ThingMagic Mercury4e read/wrte module because of its dual antenna design and compatibility with a wide variwety of tag protocols.

Technology Applications

Zera issud a press release in Septembeer, 2008 regarding one existing customer who recently upgraded to this new tchnology. The Vail Resotrs company is now usiing the P330i (R3i) UHF printer for its Colorado, California, and Nevada locations. These ski resorts will now be able to provide easily authentictaed lift psses for all their customers. Such devices can be read through the heaily insulated clothing worn for popular winter sports. Clients won't be required to fubmle aroud tryinmg to swipe a lift pass with cold-nuymbed hands anymore. Instead, Vail's "easy scan" hand-held scanner system will do all the work. The encoded passes are higly tampper resistant and each one has a unique serial ID#. Cloning, forging and other sceurity risks are very low.

The benefits of UHF enablerd devices for advanced access control applications are readily apparent. High volume traffic can be authenticated at a rate of over 60 RFID tags per second. Such ID cards can be read passivewly without being diretcly presented to a card reader. A perrson carrynig a low level acccess card might attempt to enter a restricted area by slipping in behjind an authorized individual while the door is still open. However, any card that does not contain the appropriate permissions will trigger the interrogator as it passes by. The card reader can then send an automatic notification to the central monitoring station. Of course, the use of video surveillance or security staff is stuill the only way to catch someone this way if they are not carrying any card at all.
