When it comes right down to it; how you build a shed roof is probably one of the most important considerations when building a shed. Do you live in an area where you will have some heavy snow loading or will you be concerned with heavy wind and rain; or both? You need to build a shed roof that will protect your belongings for years and years and will compliment the finished look of your shed.

When you buy your shed building plans, the one thing you really should do, make sure that the roof designs will conform to your local building codes. Once you do that you can then decide whether you want to construct them yourself or have them built for you.

When you have the completed trusses you need to mark with a pencil every 24 inches on center on the top plate of the wall. At this point you probably should have someone help you hold the first truss while you nail it in place. You then repeat the process until all the trusses are nailed in place.

Any time you build a shed roof you should cover it with 5/8 decking. It could be plywood, particle board or 6 inch wide boards. Just use screws or nails to tie the trusses together. Whatever you use for decking, you should cover the decking with asphalt roofing paper and shingles to make your roof waterproof. Another thing to remember is not to deck your roof on a windy day, the large surfaces of the decking can catch the wind and knock you right off the roof. When you build a shed roof you should always try to get help with the larger pieces.

If you live in an area known to have a few snow storms every winter you should construct you roof with a steep pitch. If you do this any excess snow accumulation should just slide off the roof. A heavy snow storm can add thousands of pounds to any roof and cause the strongest of structures to collapse. That is one sight that you do not want to see the morning after a heavy snow storm.

When you build a shed roof it is always a good idea to use at least 20 year shingles and try to match the color of your house shingles. It will look a lot better and in some areas it is required by the local building codes. Remember when you build a shed roof it must be built to take heavy loads, be water tight, last for the life of the shed and it must also look good.
