Programs Running In The Background

The page file is stored on the hard disk, and by default, Windows chooses the size of the page file automatically, increasing it in size as needed. However, if your pC tends to utilize loads of memory, then the page file may get used quite a lot and constantly change size, which can eventually cause it to be fragmented.

One thing that can be done to combat this is to increase the minimum size of the page file. To do this, click Start, right click on My PC (labelled Computer in Vista and Windows 7), then click Advanced System Settings (Vista and Windows 7 only), then click the Advanced tab, click Settings on the Performance section, then click the Advanced tab, then click Change on the Virtual Memory section. You should then increase the page file size to twice the default amount.

Defragment The Hard Disk

Another thing that can be done to speed up your Computer is to defragment the hard disk. To do this, right click on the hard disk drive and go to Properties, Tools, and Defragment Now.
