How Many Programs Are Running?

The Size of the Page File

Windows uses what’s called a page file as an extension to the RAM memory installed in your computer. The page file is stored on the hard disk, and by default, Windows chooses the size of the page file automatically, increasing it in size as needed. However, if the pC tends to utilise a lot of memory, then the page file may get used a lot and constantly change size, which can eventually cause it to be fragmented.

One thing you can do to combat it is to increase the minimum size of the page file. To do this, click on Start, right click on My Computer (labelled PC in Vista and Windows 7), then click Advanced System Settings (Vista and Windows 7 only), then click the Advanced tab, click Settings on the Performance section, then click the Advanced tab, then click Change the Virtual Memory section. You can then increase the page file size to twice the default amount.

Defragment The Hard Drive

Another thing that can be done to speed up your PC is to defragment the hard disk. To do that, right click the disk drive and go to Properties, Tools, and Defragment Now.
