Is There a Shortcut To Internet Marketing Success?

To the person dreaming of starting a business, the internet looks like a huge virtual blob of possibilities, just waiting to be tapped. It appears to be a newly-paved four-lane shortcut to unlimited wealth and success.

While there's a lot of truth to this, the reality is that it takes a lot of trial and error to make a go in business no matter what kind of business you start. Most people know there are huge advantages to working for yourself, and the internet is a vehicle that lets you work in your pajamas, set your own hours, erase your commute, and earn as much as you like. So, how in the world do you get started?

You'll want to sell a product that is in high demand by a specific sector of the population. It should be easy to understand, cost little to produce compared to its selling price, and allow for a fairly high commission to be paid. With these requirements in place you can now build a sales network spreading out over the internet and drawing sales from around the world.

But that's where it starts to get complicated. Since the internet is so open ended and vast, it is quite easy to lose track of where you are going. You'll start out looking for internet marketing ideas that might work for you and you'll end up with information overload.

You'll see an idea that looks promising and then you'll start researching it. A few searches later you'll realize that you've been led in a completely different direction. The idea that looked so promising is now buried in a mountain of conflicting ideas and opinions.

Or you'll subscribe to a few email newsletters published by self-proclaimed internet marketing experts. Little do you know that anyone can become an expert in internet marketing just by putting up a website and starting a newsletter. What these newsletters normally turn out to be are tantalizing pitches for products which, in many cases, the newsletter publisher has not even purchased him or herself.

What you have just discovered is the wonderful world of affiliate sales where internet marketers get a healthy commission for endorsing products they themselves are very likely not using. With this system internet marketers can pretend to know something about a range of products: ebooks, training courses, video series, etc. which they then praise to the heavens to their website visitors and email subscribers. You will soon find that many affiliate marketers will say just about anything to sell these products.

Unfortunately this is what internet marketing will start to look like to you. People flogging books and courses and encouraging you to make your millions by doing the same thing. Meanwhile you'll find that if you do buy the latest ebook or marketing course you will probably not read it or watch it. Even if you go as far as attending a weekend internet marketing conference you will come away with many ideas that it is virtually impossible for you to implement.

Why does this happen to thousands of would-be internet marketers around the world? The answer is pretty simple. They really haven't a clue what they want to do or how to do it. All they know is that they want to make money online because it looks so easy.

Yes, they have been swept away with ideas and formulas. They have bought books and training courses and videos. But the amount of information is so overwhelming, and the requirements for legitimate success are so complicated that there is no way they will succeed without literally years of study, experimentation and trial and error.

When pressed for an honest answer most internet marketers who have actually enjoyed a bit of success will tell you the only short cut to success is to stop buying ebooks and marketing systems and stick with one approach. Find someone who has been successful, study their system, and if it makes sense to you, commit to giving it a good try. Give it a few months before you start getting discouraged and looking for other ideas to divert your attention.

In those initial few months study the system as deeply as you can and network with others who are using it. You'll pretty quickly find people who are in exactly the same boat as you. And you'll find others who are more advanced than you and can offer advice.

Regardless of which system you decide to use, give it a good trial before you even consider packing it in and moving on to something else. In the meantime, don't let your attention be distracted by other promises of easy money. If there is a short cut to internet marketing success, this is it.
