You really don't need to defend your teak furniture. Teakwood is really exclusive in the fact that if you leave it in its natural state, it genuinely doesn't require any maintenance. You can abandon teak wood in the open air all year prolonged you don't have to be concerned about it, even in climate conditions that are extreme. It is because of this that many people deem teakwood as the supreme standard for any type of outdoor garden furniture. This is why people love teak furniture so much.

It is true that after being exposed to the sun for a long period of time that teakwood will start to turn a silvery gray color, but this is a inherent process and doesn't harm the structural integrity of the wood at all.

For people who want to preserve the inherent color of the wood that it has when they buy their furniture, it is a common practice to use a teak sealer. It is often used to help to give the teak wood a darker color as well. The sealant isn't only going to change the color of your wood, it will also give your teak some UV protection and also provide a protection from mold and mildew with an anti-fungicide. It doesn't matter whether you're teak furnishings is old or new, you can apply teak sealants to them after they have been cleaned. This isn't the same thing as varnishing your furniture. The sealant simply acts to preserve the wood, while at the same time still allowing it to release its oils naturally. Unlike varnish this will not peel or bubble up. This is going to help to stain your wood and protect it at the same time. By standing your teak a darker color, you will be providing it with more UV protection, and in the end you are going to have to stain it less. If you already have a piece of teak furniture that has previously been varnished, then you will need to sand off all of the old varnish and either leave it native or stain it afterwards.

Applying a preservative to your teak wood furnishings is pretty straightforward. You want to make sure that you don't put your first coat on unless the furnishings has been sitting in the sun for a few weeks before hand. This assures that all of the wood grains are open. To apply it, all you have to do is spray it on and then rub it with a rag. Try to make sure that you apply two coats in this fashion on all surfaces of the wood top, bottom, sides and between any slats. If you are applying the stain on any surface that you care about, then you need to make sure that you put something under your wood as you don't want to cause stain damage to anything you care about. You will need to apply the stain yearly after it has been washed with a mild detergent and water, but only to the surfaces that gets on

After doing this to your furniture you really have to do very little else to defend it. Going once in a while it wouldn't hurt to provide your furniture with a good washing to remove any type of soiling from food and dirty hands and such. Be careful spilling things on the sealant like coffee, wine, or foods that stain, as these can penetrate through the sealer and leave stains on the teak. If you want to avoid this, you can put a teak clear coat on the surfaces that are in danger, like tabletops as this will improve resistance to stains.

Because of the inherent oils that are contained in teakwood, and migrate out of the wood to the surface, in essence teakwood protects itself and makes itself pretty much impervious to water. These inborn oils leach out of the wood, and because of this it isn't a good idea to put lacquer or water sealers on any teak product. Polyurethane and glaze products will never fail to peel up and chip off of teak wood products. The only way to remove these mistakes is by standing, which can be a real nightmare and is best avoided.

It isn't a good idea to put oil on your teak furnishings either, as it has plenty of its own, and it will just end up creating a mold problem on your piece of furnishings. For someone who has done this, and they have mold growing on the furniture, you need to wash the furnishings with bleach and soap, and then sand the surface to remove the mold.

Buying a piece of teak wood furnishings is a worthwhile investment if you enjoy spending time outdoors. It adds a classy look to any yard. Understanding the correct care of teak furnishings is a vital part of helping to maintain a lifetime investment.
