Is It Time For A Creative Consultancy To Give Your Flabby Business A Workout?

Run out of momentum? Run out of steam? Need a creative consultancy? For many businesses the idea of using creative consultants doesn't often occur to them; instead they gather staff around a table, place a threatening sheet of blank paper in the centre and ask for ideas.

Blank, glum faces gaze at the blank, glum paper, and a little while later everyone breaks for tea.

The next day the meeting is forgotten and everybody carries on with what they were doing before in the same way they've always done it. Yet still the business limps along, perhaps staying still like a duck paddling furiously against the tide, or perhaps the business is slowly sinking with an inevitability to which everyone has depressingly become resigned. Yet this isn't how it has to be, and sometimes a creative consultancy can prove just the thing necessary to help kick a business back in to shape.

Think of it a little like getting a personal trainer for a while. You may have been to the gym for a while, but hit a plateau. Now you aren't so much aware of losing excess baggage and gaining strength and vitality; now you just go along because it's what you've always done. It's a routine, nothing more, and a routine carried out with little aim or purpose, and the pleasure is all but evaporated.

A personal trainer can help look at your goals in an objective way, helping to identify new ways of working, new opportunities, new advantages, and get you back on track to a more healthy and successful you.

A creative consultancy can help your business reinvent itself, discover new vitality and strength, and rebrand itself with a smarter, cleaner, healthier and stronger public face that attracts a good deal more attention - for all the right reasons.

But there are some businesses who have considered using a creative consultancy, but have chosen not to out of fear that they will completely reinvent the business, creating some new Frankenstein monster which conforms to some pre-determined model that doesn't sit comfortably with the existing aims or values. However, this is most certainly not true, and a reputable and professional creative consultancy will begin not by talking or telling, but by listening.

It's the same situation as having the personal trainer. If a personal trainer came up to you in the gym, blindfolded, and without asking you any questions about your health, weight, goals or existing workout routines, simply presented you with a set series of routines to perform, the chances are they'd be entirely unsuitable. If you accepted it for a while it would almost certainly result in you feeling even less motivated, and may even quit, or be forced to quit through stress!

Instead, effective creative consultants, like effective trainers, will start by listening, learning and gaining a solid understanding of how your business is fairing now, what you're trying to achieve how you're attempting to achieve it, what works, what doesn't, and what your business aims, principles and values are.

Only when this is all thoroughly understood can a creative consultancy start to help your business to look forwards, identify new opportunities, ways to rebrand itself, ways to capitalise on niche benefits, advantages or principles, and grow in a way which can be sustained over the long term.

But even these new opportunities and ideas don't necessarily come from the consultants alone. In many cases it is easier to think of the creative consultants as being like catalysts, helping to spark ideas already dormant within the business, igniting imagination, and helping people to see new ways of developing, and explore new opportunities in marketing and branding.

A creative consultancy will work as a partner, not as someone determined to force your business into some pre-determined mould. It's a little like the difference between a supportive, helpful and inspiring personal trainer and a fitness trainer in the army. You want your business to be strengthened, not merely bawled at on a cold winter's morning!

From re-branding to marketing, from sprucing up your art department's work to re-thinking your publications and printed materials, and from your online presence to your business cards, a creative consultancy can help pull your business up out of the mire by placing one foot firmly within your business and one foot firmly on the outside, looking at everything objectively.

For most people the problem is that both feet are on the same side, and this provides a rather unbalanced posture. By using the services of a creative consultancy you benefit from an objective stance, whilst having the core values and principles of your business retained. And as with having a personal trainer, the benefits are likely to include a longer life expectancy - certainly a benefit for any business these days.
