In part 1 of this two-part series, we dealt with issues about establishing your internet-based business. Specifically, we discussed choosing your market,
legal matters, selecting and registering a domain name, designing your website and hosting it. In this final instalment, we will look at what it takes to run
your internet business.
Marketing
This is a challenge for both start-ups and old businesses. Simply stated, marketing is undertaking all the necessary activities to drive visitors to your
website to the action you require of them. This is done by advertising of which there are free and paid methods that you can carry out online or
offline. There is a learning curve particularly with respect to online methods. And whether you use free or paid methods depends on how fast you need results
and your wallet. The former is inexpensive but works slowly and the fromer is just the opposite.
Interactive Website
When your website is interactive people stay longer on it and are more likely to take the action you desire. Interactivity tools include chatroom, contests,
surveys and ability to send emails from the site. Autoresponders are also a tool and are used to send your visitors who left their information on your
website information and messages over time. If all these sound Greek to you, relax because you can get people to do it for you.
List Building
Your list are people who have given you their name, email address and, at times, other details thereby agree to receive information from you from time to
time. The standard practice these days is double optin which means that peole leave their details on your website and they confirm that they have done so by
clicking on a part of the email you send them after you have captured their details. Lists are very useful, and many internet marketers believe that the
money is in the list.
Repeat Purchase
Marketing people have determined that it costs five times as much to acquire a new customer than it costs to serve an old one. It is because of this fact
that efforts are made to retain old customers. An increase in your customer retention boosts your profitability. Newsletters, chats, sales promotions,
bonuses are the tools used to drive retention and loyalty. If you lose a customer, you have lost twice because you lose their business (they have gone to the
competition probably) plus you have to spend resources for a new one.
Analysis
This a necessary part of running any business, start-up or not. You will need data about sales, optins, traffic to your site, conversion and expenses. When
you look closely at the data, you will be able to know what is working and what is not, whether you are profitable or not. Onthe whole you will have
information for making decisions to improve your business operations.
Even though the list of tasks to perform seem endless, be assured that you can do it. You can do it. Others have and are still doing it.
