Search engines are the freeway of the Internet. It is there that your potential customers drive to find theproducts, services and information that they need. This is why backlinking, also called inline linking is so popular. It makes sense, after all. For, if potential customers can't findyour website, you haven't even the most remote possibility of making asale. Those additional links contribute to your link popularity, helping to guide visitors to your website.

You're probably wondering what is meant by link popularity and how much it matters. Link popularity is where your website places in the ranking system used by search engines. It determines where in the line of all websites that your website will appear to the people that have entered certain key words as the surf the Internet. Of course, this now brings the question to mind: How do I make my website popular? Search engines give status and rank to sites that contain what is known as quality links. That is what defines search engines as discretionary. Google created the formula. Now almost all of the popular search engines utilize that formula to they rank web pages in their indices. That means that your web page is also ranked using the system that Google defined.

This is an appropriate time to issue a few warnings. First of all, don't think that just linking up with a large number of other websiteswill grant popularity to your link. There's a chance that the exact opposite will happen. If you are connected to something called a link farm, which is just a website full of links, it will hurt you with the search engines. They actively discourage link farms by penalizing websites that associate with the farms.

Next, remember to be mindful of the quality of the sites that you are linking to. Never link to a page that you would not want your visitors to see. After all, you don't want your website to appear as though you have an agenda that is different from what your keyword leads potential customers to believe. If you choose shoddy websites to link with, it will lessen your popularity and could hurt your reputation. Remember that the chain is only as strong as the weakest link. That also works in the world of websites!

As terrific as you think that your website may be, remember that not all sites want to link to other websites. Take the time to research possible websites you would like to link up to. Use your favorite search engine to enter the same keywords that you think high quality customers will enter to get directed to your website. Remember, your target group consists of quality, highly ranked, non-competing websites containing a resources or links page. Think objectively as you go to these sites to assess them. Do they carry quality products? Do the graphics look nice enough to be associated with your page? Are the websites easy to navigate? What sites are they linked to? Would your site fit in with that group of links or would you rather not be associated with them?

After you have located a potential linking partner, set out with determination to win them over. First, add their link to your page. That shows them that you have done your homework and that you are sincere about reciprocation. It will increase the chance that they will respond in kind. After adding their link, contact their webmaster. To make sure that they don't think that they are getting spammed, use a subject like, “I've added your link to my website.” That almost always insures that the recipient will open the message.

Use sincere flattery to let them know how valuable you find their website. Give an example or two, maybe remarking on a nice graphic or headline, so that they know that you really did visit them. Give them the url of your links page and ask them to visit your site. You might want to mention that this is a great way to help each other and ask if they will add your link to their page. Repeat this process with as many related, quality sites as you can find. Remember that you are looking for quality and non-competitive websites to connect with.

After you have contacted several appropriate sites, be sure to check back with them frequently to verify that they have included your link on their page. Wait about a month, and if they haven't linked you, send another pleasant email. It could have been an oversight, especially if they haven't updated their site since you contacted them the first time. Wait another few weeks; if the link to your website is still not on their links page, and they have been actively updating their site, simply remove their link from your own page. Don't continue to pursue them unless you really believe that the site is crucial to your backlink popularity and your business growth. Always keep all your communications kind and flattering. Do keep notes on the websites that you have contacted, who has added you and who has not. This could be done on a simple spreadsheet. It will save you time later.

If you find that the first few websites have not reciprocated, take an objective look at your website. Does it look nice? Is it easy to navigate? Does it convey the message that you intended? Make any necessary modifications before requesting any additional backlinks.

Then set up a reminder in your calendar to check your ranking in search engines on a regular basis to see if your link popularity has moved up. This will take time, so be patient. It will also take a lot of hard work as there is not a shortcut. You'll need to expend the labor that it takes to improve your popularity. Once you have succeeded, you can take pride in knowing that the search engines, and the programmers behind them, respect the effort that you have put into your website. And so will all of the extra visitors!
