Buying a suitable guitar
One cannot expect to make death metal music and other heavy music from a guitar that is solely devised for pop or standard rock music. As such if you are quite serious about becoming a death metal guitarist, you will have to buy a suitable guitar for the purpose. With an appropriate guitar you will be able to play heavy metal music such as Schechter, LTD., Esp., Jackson, etc. that generally requires fast movements.
Mastering Double-picking
Double-picking is an important segment of any heavy metal song. Even the songs played by metal bands use several riffs in combination with fast double-picking methods. In this context, try enhancing your skill in palm-muting the three thickest strings and then quickly picking between the notes on the lowest string to make your metal music more effective.
Concentrating on the first four frets
Always remember that in a metal track the most brutal and effective tricks are executed mostly on the first four frets of the guitar. So, practice palm-muting the strings and quickly picking the three lowest strings of the 3rd fret and then again of the first fret.
Tuning guitar to drop 'C' or D'
For playing several metal guitar tricks and techniques with ease you need to tune your guitar to drop 'C' or D'. in case of drop 'D' tuning, the strings of your guitar from the largest to the smallest should be in the order of 'D','A','D','g','b', and 'e' respectively. Whereas, in case of drop 'C' tuning, take the notes and tune all of them down one full step to get 'C','G','C','f','a', and 'd' respectively.
Learning palm muting
In rhythm guitar playing for death music, palm muting is essential to create a low bass and chunky sound. This is done by placing the palm of your hand at the guitar bridge when the chord is struck.
Therefore do remember to implement these vital tips if you are eager to play death metal guitar. Doing so will help you fulfill your dreams of becoming a professional Death Metal guitarist.
