There are several benefits to running a business at home.
Possible inclusions are;
You are your own boss. You determine your work hours. No one else tells you when to take lunch. You choose how many holidays you get and when they are. You can take a day off when you want to, or for required occasions. The rewards usually equal how much time and energy you put into your business. No one else tells you what to do, when to do it or how it should be done. You are able to easily have inexpensive lunches (sometimes prepared for you). You are basically in control.
But along with these benefits there are many responsibilities and what some would call negative aspects.
Possibly included;
You have to be able to manage your time well. Working to excess ~ it is easy to work long hours when working from home. You must be disciplined when taking on work. There is the responsibility for paying your own taxes and superannuation. Holidays and holiday pay aren't guaranteed, only if it is in your budget. Family distractions are more of an issue when you work from home. If you fall sick, you aren't paid.
This last point is very important. Many home based businesses are manned by a single operator. While there could be associates or outside contractors who take on some of the business workload, the majority of tasks are on the shoulders of a single manager or overseer.
When this person gets sick, work inherently stops! No work, no earnings. This is the cold hard truth which home based businesses are faced with. While one heals and gets back on their feet, there is no 'sick pay' available. Needing to get better fast and return to work can cause extra stress when you work from home.
I think this is one of the hardest and most challenging parts of having your own business for which the view is usually "Just stay well".
So what is important for the home based business? You need to be aware of all the above information and make decisions and choices to ensure you reap the rewards and benefits while taking into consideration the negatives.
Therefore the following points should be undertaken; allocate business/work hours. Don't work too excess which results in you becoming run down and subsequently sick, which results in lost work hours anyway. Ensure you take regular breaks, just like you would in a position of employment. Drink water on a regular basis and eat healthy food. Set boundaries with your friends and family members about how working from home will work. Make time for leisure ~ all work and no play is not very gratifying. Plan holidays and take them. Have a structured system for accounting and taxes.
It is quite liberating to be your own boss, a choice that I believe to have much more positives than negatives. You just need to be mindful of the pitfalls you can easily fall into and take measures to ensure that you don't fall.
