INTRODUCTION TO ON-LINE MARKETING So, when I was first told about this thing called ?Online Marketing?, it was an elusive term for me. I mean, everyone knows about marketing their products, right? Well, for me, marketing my product was accomplished by advising in the local newspaper, hanging signs on a brick and mortar store front, even snail mailing offers or information to a guest list kept in a store. Of course, when the internet became popular, everyone started getting web pages. ?wow?, I thought, ?everyone looks at the web, I am going to get a web page!? Little did I know that simply getting a web page was far from ideal. There is much more that goes into it to market my product than simply putting up a web site. So, what is online marketing and how does it work? Internet marketing, simply stated, is a way to efficiently expose your product to as many people as you can through digital means. Sounds like a mouthful, right? Well, at it?s base level, all this means is that your product gets marketed through the internet. But, here is the trick. There are many different way to market your product online. Some work better than others while what works for one person may not work as well for another for various reasons. Keep in mind that the product you market does not have to be a digital product. It can be a physical product from a brick and mortar business. It?s actually surprising how many people do not realize that. Online marketing works by exposing your product to as many people as possible world wide. Simply exposing your product is only half the battle though because if you expose your historical book to a cat lover, you won?t generate a sale, let alone an interest from that person. So, you need to make sure you are marketing to the people that are interested in your product. These people are your ?Target Audience?. We will talk more about developing a target audience in a later article. For now, let?s move on to the next obvious question. What do you need to be successful in online marketing? You will need desire, commitment and focus. Online marketing does not happen by itself. Oh sure, there are many ways to put up a web site and generate a minimal passive income but if you are going to be any kind of successful, then there is always going to be work to do. This is just as true with online marketing as it is with opening a brick and mortar business. There are many different things that a person needs to learn in order to even start an online marketing business. There are countless tools, tips and tricks out there that can be used to make online marketing successful for you. Unfortunately, it does take a lot of time to learn about certain things but once you get knowledge and experience under your belt, your business will start running more smoothly. Another important note: online marketing is not just online marketing. There are different KINDS of online marketing as well. What are the different kinds of online marketing? There are several different business models that have been developed for internet marketing. I will expand on each of these in future articles. Some of these include; e-commerce: A business sells a product directly to a consumer or business. (You may see the term B2C which equals Business to Consumer or B2B which equals Business to Business). Publishing: Put simply, this is selling advertising. Lead-Based Websites: this is an organization that generates value by acquiring sales leads from its website Affiliate Marketing: this is the process in which a product or service developed by one person is sold by other active sellers for a share of profits. The owner of the product normally provides some marketing material such as sales letters, affiliate links, tracking, facility, etc. Local Internet Marketing: - This is the process of a locally based company traditionally selling locally and utilizing the Internet to find and nurture relationships. They will then evolve to take those relationships offline. Black Hat Marketing: This form of marketing is frowned upon by many. My personal suggestion is that you stay away from these tactics as you can be more successful with any other less intrusive methods. Basically, this is a form of internet marketing which employs deceptive, abusive, or less than truthful methods to drive web traffic to a website or affiliate marketing offer. This method sometimes includes spam, cloaking within search engine result pages, or routing users to pages they didn't initially request. There are others not mentioned here that have been developed by individuals based on the needs of what the marketer is working on. All of the above mentioned methods may be used either alone or perhaps you will choose to employ a combination of any of these methods mentioned above. Remember, you may even find your own unique method. I will try to define other methods in future articles, things like Search Engine Marketing, Search Engine Optimization, Banner Advertisements and more. What does it cost to get started in internet/online marketing? For me, it is difficult to define what it costs to get started. It can be relatively inexpensive to start with a decent return on your investment. There is, however, much more expense the deeper you want to get into it but keep in mind that the neat thing about online marketing is that with a little work and commitment, you will always get a good return on your investment. You will find many tools to assist you with your marketing project and again, I will post articles about these tools later. Are there any legal issues to consider when starting an online marketing business? The answer is yes. All businesses must have a business license. When you are making money, you still have to withhold taxes and you have to obtain a tax ID number. Even if you win money at a slot machine over a certain amount, you still have to pay taxes on that income so be prepared to set up your marketing business appropriately.
