There is a rule in hypnosis that anything that includes the inner world ultimately becomes part of their outer world. If you wish to help somebody change a behavior you help them change their inner world first and that will affect the way that the behavior truly comes out later.

But hypnosis is not some sort of metaphysical strange magical experience. It is actually very natural and is happening all around you everyday. Let me give you an example.

You have most likely had the experience of driving a car and you have ten miles to go. Then immediately you are pulling up at your destination and questioning "What happened to the final ten miles?" You have no real recollection of that last a part of the journey. You realize when you started and you know you arrived. However you don't actually realize what occurred in between. This is an example of your unconscious thoughts going on automatic. Of course you were driving the car while you were thinking about different things. That's what the unconscious mind does best. Another instance could be the elevator.

You might have been in an elevator casually watching the numbers go up. You just stand there watching the numbers change. You understand what number floor you want to get out on. For example say you wish to get out on the sixth floor. The doorway opens on the third floor and everybody moves out. What do you do? You may move out with the rest of the gang and then all of a sudden you understand "Hey wait a minute this is not my floor!" and then you go back into the elevator. So what just occurred? The elevator created an experience of trance. When everybody else walked out of the elevator it represented a non-verbal suggestion to you to exit the elevaor as well. So you went right along. These are examples of natural hypnosis.

Another example is watching a movie or TV. This is an example of hypnosis in action because you merely could not make sense of what is occurring on the TV. You did not alter your personal experience to incorporate it. Let's say you walk into a room and the TV is on and everyone else is watching with rapt attention. Initially you do not understand what is going on. Then when you sit down and join everybody else you get sucked into this alternate reality with the others. You have attuned yourself to the emotional level of the group.

Have you have ever read a book and felt your emotions changing? If so then you have experienced hypnosis in action. How can your emotional world change? How can some books truly change individual's lives? Your interaction with that information is a hypnotic process that alters your mood and your emotions. It may possibly even alter the very way that you look at life. Now this can be a very important point. An emotional response is an unconscious response. You don't consciously choose your feelings. Your emotions are the results of your unconscious mind responding to the suggestions that you just present to yourself. So each time you have an emotional response it is really an unconscious response. This is a vital point to remember for a hypnotist.

There are many other examples of hypnosis taking place naturally. Any repetitive process that you just like to do like running or gardening is really very hypnotic. That is why people find such pursuits therapeutic. They are getting into a trance by which they are actually doing hypnotherapy on themselves without realizing it. It is a very powerful factor to be able to do for yourself. You can use this knowledge to influence others very strongly. I hope you now have a greater concept of what hypnosis is all about and how it is a natural a part of life.
