Articles are one of the major ways to get visitors to your website, increase pagerank and get more back links. Visitors reading your article click on the link to your site to find more information about the topic. Distributing the articles to directories increases the number of links to your site. Back links are part of the formula search engines use to determine how important your site is: the higher the number of back links the more important.
Choosing topics: The easy answer is to choose topics that are the same as the website/blog you are promoting. Narrow down the topic so it's manageable in 350 to 400 words. That may sound like a lot if you aren't proficient in writing but the words will fly by.
Write as if you were talking with a good friend and answering her/his questions. For example: If you have a dog care website one question you could answer is "How do I know how much protein is in dry dog food?"
Handle one question or topic per article. Go to yahoo answers for ideas for questions. Go to article directories and see which categories have the most entries. Leaf through hard copy publications to see the topics of their articles.
Finding keywords phrases: Keyword phrases are how people search for information on the Internet. Using keywords in your article is important if you want it to show up on the first page. Most people will choose one of the listings on the first page to click on. If your article is there it has a fighting chance of being chosen. Keywords funnel the reader from the search engines to your article and hopefully to your website/blog.
Dog food would be a keyword phrase of course, but most people will search more specifically for say, healthy dog food or safe dog food. But even these phrases have quite a bit of competition.
An easy way to find out how much competition a keyword phrase has is to pop it into a search engine with quotes. The quotes tell the search engine you want that exact phrase. "Natural dog foods," with quotes has 22,000 sites that use that phrase. That's doable. Adding to the keyword phrase decreases the competition. "Healthy safe dog food" only has 217 sites that use that phrase while "safe dog food" has 18,500 sites.
The next step is to look at the volume of searches. If nobody is looking for natural dog foods it's not a good keyword phrase choice. Go to adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal Use the tab "key word variations," enter your key words and then hit the "get more key words" tab underneath, or Under How would you like to generate keyword ideas - choose Descriptive Words or Phrases.
In a few seconds you'll be taken to a screen which shows you different keyword phrases that relate to the phrase you input and it will show the advertiser competition and the search volume. Choose phrases which don't have as much competition but do have a reasonable number of searches. Natural dog foods shows 1900 searches, it would be a good keyword phrase for an article.
