Starting a family is certainly a life-changing event. In the space of less than a year your entire life will be turned upside down. Not only will your social life change, but your economic life as well!

Everyone knows that babies can be expensive, but almost no one these days realizes that there are more ways than ever to save money, and still have a happy little one.

Your largest expense for the first few years of your baby's life will likely be food and diapers. In the first few months, you will have not many choices on the food you feed your baby. You can either use formula or breast feed. Breast feeding is the ideal way to feed your baby, but if that isn't practical for you, consider using formula such as the Kirkland formula from Costco. Most people find that using this formula is just the same as using the more expensive brands, and they can easily save about half on their formula expenses.

Once your baby has graduated from formula, you will find that you can once again save a lot of money. Instead of buying the pre-packaged baby food, find a baby food grinder. You will be able to know exactly what goes in to your baby food, because you put it in yourself! Not only will you be saving money, but your baby will be able to eat better because you know that all of the food is fresh, and has no preservatives.

Your next big item to save money is diapers. Did you know that the average child will have had over six thousand diaper changes during the first two and a half years of their lives? That is a lot of money thrown in to the trash. By using modern cloth diapers, the average family will save about $2,000 on their first baby, and much more if they are used on more than one baby.

You may know that you can save money using reusable diapers, but have old ideas of what a reusable diaper is like. If when you think of cloth diapers, you think of diaper pins, waterproof pants, and a lot of leaks, you haven't seen the modern cloth diapers.

The modern cloth diapers like Bumgenius, Econobum, or Snap-EZ are worlds away from the old fashioned cloth diapers. They don't need any diaper pins, or waterproof pants. In fact, they are as easy to change as a disposable diaper. Simply put on the cloth diaper like a disposable, and instead of fastening a tape, just fasten the velcro or the snaps.

What about messy diapers? Even changing these diapers doesn't have to be a chore. Just use a sprayer attached to your toilet, and spray the messy diaper in to the toilet. Then just throw the diaper in to your pail, and empty the pail in to your washer every two to three days. Not only are you saving a lot of money, but you are putting a lot less garbage out to the landfill.
