Foundation is used to create a perfect canvas on your face so you can add color like an artist; eye shadow, blush and lipstick. It also acts as the setting agent to create a barrier between the color and the skin's natural oils, which otherwise would dissolve your make up. However, because it covers the most surface area of your face, foundation has to blend seamlessly with your skin.

Foundations for Various Skin Types
Before you go out and buy new foundation there are two things that need to be taken into account. First of all, the foundation HAS TO complement your skin type.

Oily Skin: IF you have oily skin that is prone to shine, an oil-free formula will hinder the production of excess oil, and they usually contain extra powder particles to dry any oil produced.

Normal Skin: Normal skin can usually take any formula, but a liquid will give plenty of coverage without looking caked or heavy. Dry skin requires foundation with extra moisturizers to keep it supple, and to prevent the skin from drinking it in. A cream make up formulation will last longer and will also hydrate.

Foundation Colors
The perfect time to pick a color is when your skin is in its most natural shade. So, needles to say after your holidays or the morning after having a self tanning application would not be the best time. The best place to sample make up is on the jaw line.

Basically, foundation color falls into two categories;
Foundation bases with yellow tones
Foundation bases with pink tones
I have found lots of makeup artists to recommend yellow toned foundation for most women. Usually when you see a woman with what looks like too much foundation, it is almost always pink! That is a terrible look. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule, but if you are unsure, have a cosmetics pro help you out.

Applying Foundation
Oily Skin: For oily skin, the application of oil free formulas needs to be fast, as they dry quickly. Using clean fingers to apply small dabs to the areas most in need of coverage is the best approach; simply do one area at a time until the face is complete.

Normal Skin: For normal skin, the choice of cream-to-powder liquid or powder foundation will dictate how much time you spend applying it. Cream-to-powder is best applied with a sponge, starting in the centre of the face and working outwards; it's done in a very short time. Liquid foundation looks more natural when applied with a foundation brush. Again, work the brush outwards, being careful to use less around the eye area. Powder or mineral make up foundation should be applied with a large powder brush. While it won't give the same level of coverage as a liquid, it is a great makeup for those who are pressed for time.

Dry Skin: For dry skin, cream foundation slides easily around the face, and a little goes a long way. Dry skin tends to have few blemishes, so concentrate on the areas that need coverage the most, and leave clear areas bare; this is why getting the right color match is very important.
