This means that there is a variety of blackberry for just about every type of soil and weather pattern; blackberry varieties are cultivated uniquely for seven out of the ten types of hardiness zones. So when starting your journey with the sweet blackberry, be sure to get things off on the right foot by buying plants that are specifically cultivated for your climate zone. If you are unsure what your zone is or what types of berries can be grown in it, do a quick search engine query for all the details you need.

To grow healthy plants, you need to also choose the type that is suited to your growing space. In addition to choosing the right zone variety, you will need to decide if you have space for the erect bushes or can only fit the trailing type of blackberry into your outdoor space. The erect type is your typical fruit bush and requires a three for circle of space around it for adequate watering and root drainage. The trailing form of blackberry requires trellises and needs at least ten feet of space around it for adequate care. Take stock of your current available space and choose which type will work best for you.

When harvesting your fruit, remember to pick it in the morning for the best quality and ripeness. If you pick your berries too early in their life cycle they will have a sour taste. However, many growers, casual and professional alike, make the mistake of picking them early so that the wildlife doesn't have an opportunity to get them first. You can avoid your ripe fruit from being eaten prematurely by installing fences and mesh wiring around your plants. When doing so, just be cautious to not place the fencing in a way that would constrict the growth of the plant or prevent it from receiving the sunlight it needs. Also, be careful not to dig the fence too deep near the plants as you could compromise the root system and wound a vital root artery.

Blackberry plants are very easy to care for once you choose the correct variety for your climate and plant them properly. Like all plants, they need a bit of sun, some water, and space to grow. Blackberries flourished in the world long before man cultivated them, and we must always approach growing fauna with this in mind. Nature knows what it is doing; our job is to merely set the elegant process in motion by planting the bushes where they will have the best opportunity for a long and healthy life.
