In recent years, gardening roses organically has become more common. This is not a new trend, before commercial fertilizers were invented roses were grown naturally with success. The benefit to organic gardening is that the life span of your rose plants is actually lengthened with no danger to your family and pets from toxic chemicals.

Without human interference, the earth has a natural balance that is optimally designed for the growth of wildlife and plants. However when man starts tinkering with it, that balance is thrown off. Plants are structured to absorb nutrients through their roots from the soil for photosynthesis. The process of photosynthesis then occurs in the leaves wherein water and sunlight are used to produce the energy which is used for plant growth.

Worms, fungus, bacteria, nematodes and other organisms are naturally found in the soil. These organisms serve a beneficial purpose for your plants by breaking down the organic materials found in the soil which serves as a natural fertilizer. This natural balance is disrupted when pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers are used and destroy the helpful organisms. If those organisms are not present, serving to protect your roses, harmful organisms can attack your rose bush. While use of chemical fertilizers can give your roses a temporary boost, overuse can make the plants chemically dependent on the artificial supplements

Most of the time, organic rose gardening is inexpensive and easy. Instead of purchasing chemical fertilizers and artificial pest control, your gardening supplies will include natural materials. Enriching your soil with organic matter and compost is one of the quickest and easiest ways to start on the path to organic gardening. Spread the compost on the area, or if you are doing a new planting, work it in with the soil. A compost pile can be started by putting grass clippings, animal waste, plant clippings, dried leaves, and kitchen scraps in a pile and allowing it to decompose.

When the commitment to organic gardening is made, the traditional forms of pest control will be eschewed. However, even though you will not be buying chemicals, it does not mean you are left without recourse to getting rid of the pest. Certain types of herbs and other plants will act as a natural bug repellent if planted near your roses. Certain types of wasps and ladybugs will actually eat the harmful pets. Also, grub-eating birds, lizards, frogs, and snakes can help cut down on your pest problem.

When a pest infestation is severe enough that intervention is absolutely needed, there are several organic pesticides available on the market that are effective against pest. Typically, an organic pest solution only addresses the one specific problem rather than wreaking havoc on your entire garden.

The goal of every rose gardener, growing health roses with beautiful blooms, can be accomplished by gardening organically.
