Realizing that there are problems on your credit report can be nerve racking. You may feel frustrated and overwhelmed at the unfairness of wrong information on your report. The prospect of dealing with a large credit bureau make most people want to close the shutters and return to bed.
Finding out There is a Problem
Typically, you will not realize there is a issue with your credit report until you are rejected for a loan, job or apartment rental. You will be given a letter of denial from the loan officer explaining why you were denied and which credit bureau submitted the information. You have rights to a free copy of the credit report the loan officer used too base their decision.
Checking Your Credit Report
When you initially get your credit report, it will take you a little while to figure out just what the error is. The reports are frequently complicated and difficult to read. You will see items that are easily recognizable, but some might be challenging for you to understand. If these odd entries are part of why you were denied credit, you absolutely have to get them deleted if you can.
Disputing Errors
You are entitled to dispute errors on your credit report, but the steps needed can be frustrating. You will need patience and organization. When you initiate a dispute with the credit bureau, you need to wait for them to write back to you, wait for them to remove the problem, write them another time when the problem is still there and the procedure repeats itself.
Credit Repair Help
It is generally much easier to clean your credit report with credit repair services. These businesses know how to remain organized, keep accurate records and keep on top of the steps to get your dispute fixed as soon as possible. Even with professional help, the process can take a lot of time, so be patient.
Doing it Yourself
If you would like to do it on your own, make sure you keep an accordion folder where you can store all correspondence. Scan all paperwork you will need to dispute the debt into your computer so you can print out copies to send with your dispute.
Notify Creditors
Once you fix your credit report, you should also take time to contact the creditors who submitted bad information so the errors do not turn up on your report another time. You could also need to call these companies several times to be sure the mistakes are fixed.
Improve Future Credit
With a now clean credit report, you can try again for that loan. Meanwhile, be certain you are paying your bills on time. It may help to also pay a little more on your minimum payments to reduce your debt and improve your debt to income ratio. If your plans are put off because of credit report problems, you should do what you can to be sure you will get the best interest rate you available when you are finally approved for that loan.
