How a Hand-Grenade is Deployed

In terms of anti-personnel weapons, one of the most ideal ever deployed is the hand-thrown grenade. As the weapon's form resembles a pomegranate, the word ‘grenade’ derives from that. Grenades have been used in combat since it was discovered by the Byzantines that Greek Fire could be kept in glass or ceramic jars and it would explode when thrown.

By hollowing out small cannon-balls and filling with an explosive mixture, the chinese developed the grenade further - and were pioneers in this particular type of grenade. Throughout World War Two, the Wehrmacht used the Stielhandgrenate or ‘potato masher’ which is perhaps the most iconic grenade of all time. Many improvised and homemade grenades have been produced for rebel armies and in civil wars taking into consideration contempory grenade design, but replacing a fragmentation shell with an explosive compound mixed with steel ball bearings

Modern grenades are much more complex than these earlier designs. This article will review how the popular American-made M67 Fragmentation Grenade can best be used and the manner in which it works.

When it comes to deployment, the user assumes the ‘throwing position’. This means that the M67 grenade is held about the user's waist with the user's feet spread shoulders-width apart. After assuming this stance, the right-handed user removes the safety clip and then places his/her left index finger into the pin of the grenade, making sure of a firm grip on the main body of the grenade and safety lever with the right hand. It’s critically important to do this in order that the lever doesn't simply fly off and ignite the fuse when the pin is pulled.

If the pin is pulled for any reason, it can be put back safely as following this method assures your safety. For added safety, the pin is kinked to prevent an unplanned fuse ignition and the user must pull hard enough to straighten the pin so it comes out. The lever is released and a spring-loaded firing pin lights the fuse when the pin is pulled and the grenade is thrown. The explosion will cause a loud bang and a very bright flash, not to mention a strong concussion wave and high levels of localized collateral damage.

On average, the four hundred gram M67 can be tossed about thirty yards. It has a five-second fuse that ignites the one hundred and forty grams of high explosives inside a round steel body. Instantly dispersing as hundreds of pieces of hot steel shrapnel, the round case shatters when the explosives ignite. Offering a kill radius of five meters, the grenade has a casualty radius of fifteen meters. However, it is important to be very careful to toss the grenade from cover as fragments can travel as far as two hundred and thirty meters.

In different combat situations, the M67 Fragmentation Grenade has been deployed as a punishing anti-personnel weapon.
