Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery as it is commonly known as, is a surgical procedure through the abdominal muscles are tightened, excess skin and body fat removed to obtain a smooth and flat abdomen. Tummy tuck surgeries are conducted both on men and women.

This type of surgery is normally performed by cosmetic surgeons and they take anywhere from two to five hours to be completed. The patient is first administered general anesthesia and the surgery starts with an incision done by the surgeon below the bikini line. For patients with excessive skin, the surgeon will make another incision across the belly button. The surgeon will then pull the skin off the abdominal muscle, remove the excess fat and finally suture the muscles to tighten them.

The incisions are closed and bandaged and the post surgery and recovery period ranges from two to six weeks depending on the extent of the surgery. The initial two weeks of recovery can be a bit uncomfortable, but relieved by painkillers. Marks left by the surgery are normally hidden by clothing. As time passes the scars fade, although they don't completely go away.

Depending upon the desired effect, cosmetic surgeons may also perform liposuction to further remove fat. Stretch marks from this general area an be taken care of at this time as well. However, these procedures will be discussed and agreed with the patient prior to surgery.

Tummy tuck procedure can be performed on anyone who has excess skin and fat in the abdominal region, although it is never done on severely overweight people. The patient should be at least 18 years of age and be able to understand the consequences of the procedure. The patient should be in generally good condition of health both physically and psychologically. They should not be pregnant or plan on getting pregnant for sometime.

The muscles and skin in the abdominal region loses its suppleness and tone due to various reasons such as sudden and significant weight loss, pregnancy, normal aging and genetic predisposition. Tummy tuck surgeries can be performed on women who have given birth to children by C-Section. Multiple pregnancies and C-sections can cause the abdominal muscles and skin to sag severely. The fat that gets deposited during and after pregnancy can be quite stubborn and may not yield to dieting or exercising, making tummy tuck procedures a necessity.

The general consensus is that abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery should not be performed at the same time as a C-section. A person should wait at least six months after delivery to allow the body to recover to the maximum extent possible. The main reason is that if they are performed together, the scar can be clearly visible. Although this is quite a common surgical procedure, be sure to contact the most reliable surgeon who will take the time to discuss all the details with you.
