Décor means to decorate. Home décor means to decorate your home. The way you decorate your home defines who you are and tells the world what you are all about. Home décor is your personal stamp on your home. My current décor is contemporary cardboard box as I just moved recently and haven’t finished unpacking yet but I expect my décor to change, and hopefully for the better, as the boxes empty.

Most people’s first whirl with home décor is their bedroom when they are a kid. Choices may be the color of the walls or the posters to put over your bed or a Big Bird or Mickey Mouse switch plate. The college dorm room is usually an interesting challenge for a young person to decorate, the challenge being fitting a lot of stuff into a small space. By the time most folks have their first apartment or house; they have some home decor experience under their belt.

Home décor ideas are everywhere you look. There is a variety of magazines and web sites that focus on decorating and things for the home. There are thousands of home decorating experts out and about ready to help you feng shui your space into a comfortable and inviting area.

Before beginning any home decorating project, the first thing you should do is establish a budget. Be sure your budget is reasonable and within your means of living. If you are creative in your decorating style you can make a hundred dollars worth of decorating look like a million bucks. Decide if you will do all you're decorating at once or in phases. You will most likely decide phasing your home décor projects is the way to go. A room at a time or a floor at a time, it is up to you.
Once you have decided on a budget, decide on a theme of some sort. Will your home decor be modern, classic or a mixture of everything under the sun? Prioritize your list of what you absolutely want and what you can live without. As you go about spending money, some things that were on your absolutely must have list might suddenly be relegated to the live without list. Do your homework and shop around for prices of the things you want. The most expensive isn’t necessarily better. It just means it cost more.

When shopping for furniture, have a room layout handy with the dimensions and locations of doors and windows. Consider the location of your electrical outlets when placing furniture. My mother and father would always end up putting the biggest piece of furniture in front of the outlets instead of the table with the reading lamp. If your home décor is flexible, you won’t have that problem.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match your home décor style within a room. It might give it the eclectic look you didn’t know you were looking for. Art will provide a nice accent in a room you may consider hum drum. A new area rug or flower stand just might add the punch you want for your home. Whatever you do with your home decor is the right thing to do as long as it makes you comfortable.
