The necktie not only sets off the suit, but can even be considered the "soul" of the suit. If you are attending a formal event, your suit will seem incomplete without a tie. Ties come in many varieties in terms of color and material. Your tie should match your shirt and your suits. These days, most suits are in shades of gray, both light and dark, blue, black and brown, so neckties will look best if you choose a warm color such as dark red, purple or a coffee colored brown. The medium light tone color neckties are suitable for dark complexion but not the neckties in dark or too light color. There should be a layered feel when matching a necktie with a suit. Light and dark suits are both enhanced by wearing ties of contrasting shades. You should match the width of your necktie with the width of the collar on your suit or shirt. The large pointed collar shirt with a narrow tie or a wide necktie with a small collar suit is inappropriate.

You must pay attention if the colors of neckties, shirts, and suits match. In general it is advisable to wear three colors or less. For example, a navy suit can go with a blue shirt and an azure necktie; of course, the tie can have some red or white stripes or other patterns. Warm-colored neckties such as those that are red or brown match best with light colored suits such as those that are beige or grey and with shirts that are light colored; cool-colored neckties such as blue or gray match best with suits that are in dark colors such as blue or navy and with shirts that are azure or pink. Simply put, gray suits require both light colored neckties and shirts while dark suits need light colored shirts paired with a dark colored necktie.

You should match the color of your tie with the event. For a serious or somber occasion, choose a dark, muted or black tie, and save the bright and colorful necktie for festive occasions and dinner parties. To match ties and suits, you must follow certain rules. There is a British style and an American style associated with striped neckties. The British style of stripes is to have it slant from top right to lower left, while the opposite orientation is the American style. Usually, British and French styled suits belong with British neckties and American and Italian styled suits belong with American ties. The necktie may reflect a person's psychological attributes because the necktie remains an important and specific accessory of clothing for males. A short tie with a large knot indicates the strong confidence of a man; A tie with a too tight or too small knot demonstrates the characteristics of self-abased. According to this, the necktie should be tied loosely.

There are some tricks to correctly tie a tie. If you use the following tip you will not need to turn your collar over when putting on your tie. First, make sure you button your shirt and allow the necktie to hang outside of the collar; then, tightly hold the wide end snug beneath the collar and pull hard on the opposite end until the necktie is tightly snug within the middle of the collar. For a nicely-tied necktie, each end should be drooping such that the wide end is snug against the narrow one and with an overall length denoted by the tie being held right at the waist line. If you are wearing a sweater vest, then you should wear your tie inside your vest.
