If ever the occasion arises when you are prompted to enter a BIOS password upon booting up your computer, there are a few methods on how to reset BIOS password without too much effort. In the event you are well versed in the workings of your computer and its system, you can write an application to sniff out the password. Alternatively, there are a few options of utility software which can be run on your computer to reset the BIOS password. Some of these utilities are dependent on BIOS type whereas others run on all brands of motherboard. Since the BIOS password is stored in CMOS memory when the computer is powered off, CMOS battery removal effectively erases all information including the password. Upon powering up, enter the correct CMOS setup details to use the computer. A possible challenge which may arise is a battery soldered to the motherboard. As such, look for a jumper to clear the password. Check the motherboard documentation for more details on its location. Alternatively, short both points at where the battery connects to the motherboard. Take great care when doing this as you don’t want to unnecessarily spoil your motherboard. Do note that CMOS battery removal may not work to reset BIOS passwords on some laptops. You may need to bring your machine into a service center.

If the method with CMOS battery removal doesn’t work, look for the Real Time Clock on your motherboard and reset it. Depending on whether this clock is powered externally or internally, a simple task of removing it from its socket and reseating it is sufficient to reset the BIOS password. Otherwise, you may need to short some pins for a few seconds.

An alternative method on how to reset BIOS password is by following solutions set by the computer vendors. Depending on the brand of your computer, each method varies accordingly.

Depending on BIOS type in your computer, there is the open secret of backdoor passwords. These passwords are used by the respective BIOS manufacturers to enter the system regardless of the user-defined password. Normally meant for testing and maintenance purposes, they are supposedly not to be misused or abused.
