Isn't it annoying? Baby has become very grizzly, has white spots in his mouth or has a persistant rash on his bum that almost looks like pimples in appearance. Sorry, but these are common symptoms of a baby yeast infection.

What are the causes of a baby yeast infection?

There are usually four ways that your baby may get a yeast infection;

1) When you are giving birth; If Mom has a yeast infection in her urinary tract then there is a good chance that baby will pick it up as it is going through the birth canal.

2) During breastfeeding;
During the breastfeeding process it is very easy for Mom to pass a yeast infection onto baby and for a baby with a yeast infection to pass it back to Mom.

3) Cleanliness;
Modern diapers are so good that it is easy to leave them on for longer than you ought to while you finish up several other jobs - we've all done it! But by keeping them on longer we are actually creating the perfect environment for the Candida fungi to breed.
When bathing baby pay particular attention to the genital area, especially for girls.

4) Antibiotics;
While antibiotics do not cause baby yeast infection symptoms, they can cause a delay in the immune system of the baby. There are many children that are on antibiotics from the time they are born and these are very necessary so do not refuse them, but be aware that they do make bub more susceptible to yeast infections and take extra precautions. This may involve feeding them a specialist infant probiotic.

Mothers take heed too! Many of you will also be on antibiotics after giving birth which will make you very prone to a yeast infection.

If the rash that baby has is treated and gets noticeably better by the next diaper change, then there is a good chance that you have not dealt with a baby yeast infection, but if it continues to get worse, spreads to cover the genitals and lower tummy or takes on a scalloped edge with or without small white spots, then there is a good chance that Candida is the cause.
If you have any concerne about your baby's rash not clearing or if they get white spots in their mouth do not hesitate to seek madical advice.

What then?

If the doctor thinks that baby has a yeast infection then he might take a small sample - it's OK, bub won't feel it - and send it off to the lab for confirmation. He might be so confident that it is a baby yeast infection that he will give you a prescription for an anti-fungal medicine without even needing to take the sample.

Remedies that you can make at home
There are many home remedies for the relief of baby yeast infection symptoms, from the use of tea tree oil (very diluted - 1 drop to 2 litres of water), to colloidal silver, to cinnamon oil, yoghurt or cider vinegar.

Aloe gel or a cool damp chamomile tea bag pressed to the area may also relieve the symptoms.

Changing the diaper more regularly than usual and having 'bare bum time' will help the area to breathe and heal as well as helping to prevent a Candida overgrowth.
Please ensure that any Candida infection that your baby end up with is treated quickly and thoroughly. A little persistance here may save you a load of grief in the future.
