If you ran an offline business, you could not hope to engender traffic to it for nil cost. However, in the world wide web, things are rather different and you can produce free web site traffic.

Although these free techniques of traffic creation might not cost you money, they will in fact cost you time. Nonetheless, if you have little cash but lots of time, energy and zeal, you will be able to generate traffic to your web site.

The other drawback of generating free web site traffic is that you won't get a ton of visitors overnight, but if you keep following these tips, you will see an increase in the quantity and quality of your visitors. If you can't afford to pay for advertising, then that is better than nothing.

1. Visit online forums. All you need to do is enter into Google search the subject of your web site (niche) + forums. For example if your site is about cats you would enter "cats" + forum or "cat lovers" + forum. This will ensure that you're going to a forum for people who are already interested in the subject of your web site. Browse around and join in some of the threads but don't just spam with your web address. Look for questions to which your web site actually contains the answer in an article. For instance someone asks "How do you bath a cat?" and you reply "I have never actually tried to bath my cat but I have read an article about bathing cats which seems to offer sensible advice. You can read it here ...." and you put the url of the page on your site which contains that article.

2. Make sharing easy. Make sure that your site offers readers the opportunity to social bookmark your pages and email them to their friends.

3. Exchange links. Search for other sites on a similar topic. Don't choose sites which are in direct competition to yours so if your site is about cat health try choosing sites about cat toys. Any good site will have a method of contacting the webmaster, so just email them with details of your site and ask if they'd like to exchange links with you.

4. Article marketing. Write good quality articles about your niche and submit them to the best article directories. Make sure that you have a really good resource box tempting readers to click on the link to your site. My favourite article directories are EzineArticle.com, Article Content King and Go Articles.

5. Update your site. Write keyword rich articles and update your site with them regularly. The search engines love a site which is updated on a regular basis.

If you follow the above suggestions, you should soon have a steady flow of visitors to your site; but remember joining one forum or writing one article isn't enough. You will need to work hard and do all these things on a daily basis but the traffic will come.
