The blue gleaming water in a beautifully designed swimming pool is indeed a tantalizing sight but to maintain it at its prime condition takes quite some effort. Quite frankly, if you do not take adequate precautions the water would stink badly. Every time you see a well maintained swimming pool you should appreciate the serious efforts taken by the pool owner to maintain it at its prime condition.

But then do not imagine that you should spend hours together at the pool laboriously trying to maintain it. It is quite easy and requires only about ten minutes on an average daily. For this you should draw up a maintenance schedule and stick to it. The immediate concern for a swimming pool be it above ground swimming pool or in ground swimming pool is the alkalinity level of the water. You should see to it that the ph value is maintained at a range of seven to eight. The dissolved alkaline particles should not be more than 180 parts per million. Maintain the water always pathogen free and for this you have to use chlorine. Do not use too much but about 3 ppm should be sufficient for any swimming pool. All bacteria and algae are sure to be destroyed and you can use the easily available chlorine tablets for this purpose. Once in a week when you are sure no one is going to use the swimming pool for another 6 hours use a little more quantity, say 5 ppm and ensure that no bacteria thrive in the swimming pool. You can regularly use an algae killer as per your schedule to kill all algae. These otherwise tend to make the water green.

You have two basic goals before you when you are maintaining your swimming pool. You must keep all users safe from bacteria and you should you should keep the water clean and pathogen free.

You must try to be liberal in the use of the cleaning materials and chemicals and this will add up to the cost of maintenance. Every time you clean the waters electricity has to be used fore running the water and you must include this cost also in maintenance. Please do not buy cheap chemicals. This may spoil the delicate water balance in your pool. You must ensure that you use a good quality filtration system in your pool to keep the water clean and shining all the time. There is no harm in maintaining beautiful floating plants in the swimming pool but take care that the old leaves do not fall into the water and rot. This will cause a foul smell to emanate from the water.

In the winter season if you want to use the pool you need a heater and you should use a good quality heating system for this. If you have children keep them safely away by having a fence wall around the pool and keeping it locked when not in use. You can also use a tarp to cover the water to avoid any one falling into the pool.
