You may not be having septic tank troubles at the moment, but the day may come that you will. Undoubtedly it is a good idea to at least know the basics of how to keep your system in good running order. Prevention is key to maintaining a healthy tank, so that it will not need much maintenance over the years, if it is used normally.

Perhaps most important, be sure to always tell everyone who lives in your household about proper use, so there is no chance of harmful behaviors causing septic tank problems. If everyone knows how to keep your system in good running order, there will be fewer expensive problems to fix in the long run.

One of the most important ways to keep your septic tank in good running order is to conserve water. There are many ways to conserve water every day, which in turn keeps down the total volume of waste water going into your system. Conserving water not only saves you a lot of money on your water bill, but it helps the environment that we all have to live in.

You may have been told to put all of your laundry in the washing machine at once, to fill it right up. But in fact it is better to have smaller loads of laundry every two days or so. This keeps waste water flowing into your septic system, but doesn't overload it. You may also appreciate dealing with fewer clothes more often, and not having to fold huge mounds of laundry.

Fix leaky faucets promptly, because even small drips can add up to gallons when left leaking overnight for several weeks. Remind your family to take short showers and use technology to your advantage by installing shower heads that reduce water flow without compromising water pressure.

The garbage disposal in the kitchen sink is a modern day convenience that can actually cause problems to your septic tank system if not used correctly. If it's not of the highest quality it may not successfully grind up the bits and pieces of food that you feed into it. It may also tend to use up more water in the process of trying to do a proper job. However, disposal units are useful. If they are used properly they can actually help your septic by keeping harmful chunks of food from escaping into your tank.

The septic drain field is a very important component in keeping your septic tank system in good running order. You do not want your drain field to be too damp, or liquid waste will not be absorbed very well. Therefore, it is a good idea to have beautiful green grass growing on it, that way the moisture will be wicked away. Also be sure that any gutters are directed away from it, to keep your drain field from becoming too soggy.

Of course, the efficient functioning of your septic system also depends on how everyone in your house treats your toilet. Only wastes and toilet tissue should ever be flushed down your toilet. Feminine napkins and similar products should be thrown in the trash, along with anything that could back it up.

Why not put a little sign near your toilet reminding everyone to be prudent. If you think before tossing that big wad of tissue or hair into the toilet, the chances of having to make an emergency plumbing call to get things flowing again, will be greatly lessened. Be good to your septic system and it'll be good to you.
